C.B. Aycock cranks out 3-set win over EW in volleyball

Charles B. Aycock simply survived the first set.

The Golden Falcons dominated the final two and escaped Eastern Wayne with a 30-28, 25-15, 25-18 victory on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference volleyball scene on Tuesday night.

"Eastern Wayne came out ready to play which I fully expected," C.B. Aycock head coach Davis Harris said. "They want nothing more than to come out and beat us, and that first set showed that they were here to play."

The Warriors pulled out to a 12-8 lead early in the set on a kill by Allyson Newsome and boosted the advantage to 17-12.

C.B. Aycock battled back behind the hitting of Meredith Burroughs, who delivered three kills in the next four points to get the Golden Falcons back in the set.

An unforced error by the Golden Falcons set up the Warriors with set point at 24-22, but they gave the momentum right back with a service error of their own. An ace by Emily Martin tied the set at 24-24, and C.B. Aycock took a 30-28 win on back-to-back kills by Martin and Burroughs.

"You lose a set that you had a couple chances to win and it really takes the wind out of you," Eastern Wayne head coach Tony Parrish said. "We weren't the same after that."

C.B. Aycock dominated the second set and rallied from a small deficit early in the third to take the match.

Madison Mercer paced the Golden Falcons (4-5 overall, 3-2 ECC) with eight kills and three blocks. Burroughs added 11 kills and one block.

"Madison is a competitor and tonight she played a very solid all-around match," Harris said. "She is her toughest critic out there, but she gets herself fired up and that flows to everyone else on the floor."

Jenna Rouse led Eastern Wayne (4-8, 0-4) with four kills and two blocks. Newsome and Mariah Stephens each tallied three kills. Starla Strickland recorded three aces.

Eastern Wayne travels to Triton on Thursday, while C.B. Aycock is the guest of Goldsboro today.
