• RED OAK -- An early three-touchdown deficit proved to be too much for Southern Wayne overcome in a 35-22 defeat at Northern Nash on Friday night.

The Saints fell behind 21-0 early in the second quarter before mounting a furious comeback.

Andrew Matthews got the Saints on the board with a two-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Thomas Kelly just seconds before halftime.

The momentum was short-lived, however, as Northern Nash star Quay Mann returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown. Trailing 28-8,

Southern Wayne mounted one more rally. Kelly capped the next Saint possession with a seven-yard score and Matthews pulled the visitors within one score on an 85-yard touchdown run.

The Saints got the ball back, trailing 28-22, with a chance to win the game in the final two minutes, but Mann once again thwarted the rally with an interception that he returned for a touchdown.

"At times tonight we looked really good both offensively and defensively," Southern Wayne head coach David Lee said. "We just have to be more consistent with our play over an entire ballgame."

Southern Wayne (0-2 overall) visits Jacksonville White Oak next Friday.
