MOUNT OLIVE -- Citing family circumstances, Mike Lawson has stepped down as head men's lacrosse coach at Mount Olive College on Tuesday.

Jeff Eisen, athletics director, said a nationwide search for a successor is underway. Assistant coach Michael Foderaro will run the Trojan men's lacrosse program in the interim.

"It has been a true privilege to work with all of the great people at Mount Olive College, but it is time for me to focus on my family," said Lawson. "I am excited to watch this program develop into a Division II power."

The Trojans' 40-man roster includes 22 freshmen, two sophomores, 15 juniors and one senior. The men's lacrosse student-athletes represent nine different states and four countries.

"Mike has worked hard to bring in a great recruiting class and to put our program in a position to be successful as we enter our first year of competition," said Eisen. "It is unfortunate that he will not be able to take us on the next step of this journey, but we appreciate all he has done for MOC athletics this past year."

Lawson was named as Mount Olive's first-ever head men's lacrosse coach last November. The Trojans begin their inaugural season of men's lacrosse February 16 at Amon Field against Young Harris College. Mount Olive's 14-match schedule includes six home contests and a spring break trip to Florida for a pair of matches.

Mount Olive is one of seven Conference Carolinas schools sponsoring men's lacrosse and the Trojans will play six consecutive conference matches to end the regular season. The 2013 Conference Carolinas men's lacrosse tournament takes place April 19-21 in Burlington.
