* Rachel Uzzell logged a double-double with 11 service aces and 13 assists in Wayne Country Day's season-opening 13-25, 9-25, 15-25 loss to Grace Christian of Sanford on Thursday afternoon.

Sarah Crooks provided six kills. Bailee Creger (five aces), Jessica Zhou (five digs), Hannah Pearson (two aces, two kills), Savannah Strickland (two kills) and Alexandra Draughon (three aces) each contributed to the offense and defense.

The Chargers (0-1 overall) entertain Faith Christian of Rocky Mount on Aug. 16.

Boys' soccer

Wayne Country Day 0

* Grace Christian of Sanford tallied three second-half goals, including two in the final 10 minutes, and handed Wayne Country Day a 4-0 loss in the season-opening match for both teams Thursday afternoon.

First-year Chargers head coach Steve Ellis said his team stuck to its game plan and frustrated the Crusaders, who finished runners-up in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A state tournament a year ago.

"Freshman Corey Carpenter had a stand out game," Ellis said.

The Chargers (0-1-0 overall) travel to Faith Christian of Rocky Mount on Aug. 16.

Local golf

Walnut Creek LGA

* Mother Nature rained out weekly play on the Walnut Creek Country Club links, but more than 60 golfers tackled the course Thursday during an East Carolina Ladies Golf Association meet.

Walnut Creek's Kathy Woodard claimed first low gross (70) and Jewel Ivey took second gross in first flight play. Evelyn Rose captured second gross in third flight.

Linda Cannon and Charlotte Campbell seized second gross and low putts, respectively, in fourth flight. Pete Reaves secured second net in fifth flight.

JV sports

* Volleyball: Wayne Country Day 2, Grace Christian-Sanford 1 -- Tiffany Larson collected five kills, dished out six assists and served an ace in the Chargers' 25-20, 23-25, 25-23 season-opening victory. Teriece Hawley (two aces), Stephanie Schappell (three aces, three kills), Lillian Freeman (one ace, one kill), Olivia Dively (one ace, one kill), Hannah Neal (one ace) and Sarah Jane Ammons (one ace) each contributed to the three-set win. The Chargers (1-0 overall) play host to Faith Christian of Rocky Mount on Aug. 16.
