DUDLEY -- Cross one goal off the list.
Wayne County Post 11 swept both games of a doubleheader from New Bern Post 24 on Thursday evening and clinched the Area I East South Division championship.
"We knew we had to win two today to get that number one spot," Post 11 head coach Jason Sherrer said. "These guys play hard and it's a real testament to what they've tonight. It's a lot about the character of the guys."
Wayne County concludes its regular season tonight at Clayton.
Zack Mozingo came within one out of throwing a no-hitter and Wayne County claimed game one 4-0. Post 11 cranked out 11 hits and needed just five innings to win game two 10-0.
Wayne County (11-6, 6-3 Area I East South Division) threatened with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the second inning. New Bern starting pitcher Michael Coombs struck out Jamie Dove and got Cameron Taylor to ground out to end the inning.
Jacob Sasser's two-run single broke open a scoreless ballgame in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sasser later scored on an error and Jamie Dove scored as part of a double-steal.
Mozingo retired 14 straight batters at one point and came within an out of a no-hitter before Post 24 Chandler Seagle singled up the middle. Hunter Hackney, who led off the seventh inning with a walk, was thrown out at home trying to score on Seagle's single to end the ballgame.
Mozingo finished with eight strikeouts and two walks to earn the win on the mound.
"Mozingo threw a one-hitter and he threw really well," Sherrer said. "That's probably the best he's thrown all year. We definitely pitched well today."
Post 11 took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of game two. Ashton Cox reached on an error and scored on Will Winslow's RBI single.
Wayne County pushed across five runs in the home half of the third inning. Cameron Taylor scored on an error and Hunter Barnett followed with a two-run double. Barnett scored on Ashton Cox's RBI groundout. Taylor was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in his second at-bat of the inning to increase Post 11's lead to 6-0.
"Usually we get a couple of guys on and we can't string hits together at the right time," Sherrer said. "We were able to get some guys on with walks and get them on and get them in. Sometimes we struggle to get two runs and tonight we got 10."
Cox's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning extended Wayne County's lead to 7-0. Taylor tacked on an RBI groundout in the home half of the fifth inning.
Tyler Gainey and Mozingo both delivered RBI singles to end the ballgame. Gainey, Mozingo and Winslow both had two hits.
Collin DuBose pitched a complete game and scattered three hits with five strikeouts and no walks to pick up the win on the mound.
