Spring Creek's Ramfjord resigns varsity girls' basketball post

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Amanda Ramfjord says it's time to go home.

The Dalton, Ga., native tendered her resignation Friday as head women's basketball and head men's soccer coach at Spring Creek High School. She'll return to her alma mater, Southeast Whitfield, to serve as an assistant coach in women's basketball.

"I'm ready to go home," Ramfjord said. "When you live nine hours away from your parents and you only see them on holidays and during the summer, that's really tough. The opportunity came so I took it.

"I really enjoyed my time coaching at Spring Creek and the girls were great."

Ramfjord spent four seasons as an assistant coach to Wendy Lee at Mount Olive College. She took over for Cassandra Tyson in 2005, who was named Spring Creek's head coach when the school began its first season of varsity competition in 2001. Ramfjord led the Gators to a program-best eight wins and a conference-best, third-place finish the 2010 season. That is the program's only appearance in the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.

This past fall, Ramfjord directed the men's soccer team to its fourth consecutive Carolina Conference championship and fifth overall in six years. The Gators logged a 10-4-2 worksheet and lost to perennial powerhouse Southwest Onslow in the third round.

"I've enjoyed watching the kids grow," Ramfjord said. "We weren't very talented, but they had a lot of heart. Heart overcomes talent sometimes. They were dedicated and put in the hard work."

A coach willing to step in and assist in any capacity, Ramfjord leaves a "big void" in the Gators' athletics staff, according to athletics director Heath Whitfield.

"Though we are very happy that she gets to move back home, we are very sad to see her go," Whitfield said. "She has been a big asset to the whole school, whether it is coaching multiple sports, driving activity buses for teams or even driving school buses when needed.

"We wish her the best on her next endeavor."

Whitfield didn't comment if a search had started for Ramfjord's successor. The job opening has not been formally listed on the NCHSAA website.
