On their first day without school, the young golfers of Wayne County met at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course for the Wayne County Junior Amateur.

For the second consecutive year the finish came down to the final hole.

Faith Christian senior Bryce Webber finished with a birdie and took home the champion's trophy with a round of 74. Webber narrowly edged Rosewood standout Nick Adams by one stroke. Southern Wayne's Kyle Best finished third with an 80.

"We had a good turnout again this year and the weather held off for us," tournament organizer Stan Adams said. "The competition was as good as it has ever been."

Webber started slow, with a double-bogey on the first hole of the day, but got a little momentum going with a birdie on his second hole of the day. Webber made four additional birdies and found himself tied with Adams going into their final hole, the par-five ninth.

Adams found a fairway bunker with his drive and opened the door for Webber who played a safe shot to the right side of the green. Adams finished his par with a tap-in and watched as Webber sank a short putt for birdie.

"I felt good once I made my first birdie," Webber said. "I took a triple-bogey on the front nine because I hit a poor bunker shot, but I made up for it with birdies."

Jonathan Barrow emerged the victor in the 14-15 year old age division. The Southern Wayne sophomore carded a round of 75. Bryce Jones won the 12-13 year old division with a round of 89.

John Thomas Avent claimed the 10-11 year old division with a nine-hole score of 46. Adam Greenwell won the boys' 8-9 year old division and Kelly Lewis won the girls' 8-9 year old division.

"Some of the young players really played well," Adams said. "The high school kids are always strong, but over the past year or two the younger age groups have improved the most."

The Wayne County Men's Amateur is July 6-8.
