C.B. Aycock 6, Cleveland 1
* PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock clinched the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season championship outright with a 6-1 win over Cleveland on Tuesday evening.
Katie Gay led the Golden Falcons with two hits and two RBI. Meredith Burroughs (two RBI), Rachel Jordan (RBI), Brooke Bell, Reagan Herndon, Connor Davis and Misty Edwards each contributed a hit.
Aycock (20-2 overall, 11-0 ECC) concludes the regular-season Thursday at Eastern Wayne.
North Duplin 8, Princeton 3
* PRINCETON -- North Duplin picked up a key Carolina 1-A Conference win with an 8-3 victory at Princeton on Tuesday night.
The Rebels broke the game open with four runs in the third inning. Ansley Hill led North Duplin with three hits. Courtney Bennett added two hits. Casey Thornton, Alonna Pate and Skylar McCarty each had a hit. Hill picked up the win inside the pitcher's circle.
Princeton (11-6 overall, 6-1) entertains Goldsboro on Thursday. North Duplin (7-6, 3-2) plays host to Ayden-Grifton on Friday.
Rosewood 18,
Goldsboro 4 (5 inn.)
* Rosewood defeated Carolina 1-A Conference rival Goldsboro 18-4 in five innings on Tuesday evening.
Freshman Kayla Hardee recorded her first win inside the pitcher's circle for the Eagles.
Talaya Lassiter led the Cougars with two hits and an RBI. Bailee Ellis (RBI) and Brandy Johnson each had a hit.
Goldsboro (2-10 overall, 0-6 CC) visits Princeton on Thursday, while the Eagles (14-2, 4-1) travel to Spring Creek on Friday.
Girls' soccer
Eastern Wayne 4,
Southern Wayne 3
* DUDLEY -- Megan Mozingo scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute and Eastern Wayne escaped with a 4-3 win on Tuesday night at Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Southern Wayne.
Mozingo opened the scoring in the ninth minute and the Saints' Alva Perez tied the game at 1-1 in the 22nd minute. Dixie Ramirez put Southern Wayne in front in the 31st minute.
Ann Reed Hulse tied the score at 2-2 in the 42nd minute. Mozingo scored in the 47th minute and the Saints' Cynthia Rivera knotted the game at 3-3 in the 50th minute.
The Warriors finished with a 12-8 edge in shots on goal.
Southern Wayne's Maryori Nunez recorded nine saves. Erika Duke made five saves for Eastern Wayne.
"Southern Wayne played very well," Warriors' head coach Jorg Wagner said. "They were dangerous throughout the match and managed to capitalize on three of our mistakes. I thought the late score, while probably deserved overall, was certainly very fortunate."
Wayne Country Day 6,
Oakwood 1
* GREENVILLE -- Wayne Country Day built a 3-0 lead at halftime on its way to a 6-1 win on Tuesday afternoon at Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference rival Oakwood.
Margaux Pope and Sarah Best both scored twice for the Chargers. Margaret Tanner and Catherine Ford each contributed a goal. Ford and Pope both had an assist.
Wayne Country Day (9-5-0 overall, 4-2-0 CPIC) visits Faith Christian-Rocky Mount on Friday.
Goldsboro 7, Spring Creek 0
* Ana Harris notched four goals and dished out two assists during Goldsboro's 7-0 shutout over Carolina 1-A Conference rival Spring Creek.
Dorian Wences contributed two goals and two assists.
Holly Pittard and Morgan McLaughlin each scored one goal.
The Cougars travel to Princeton on Thursday.
Baseball
C.B. Aycock 3, Cleveland 2
* PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock rallied from a 2-0 deficit for a 3-2 win over Cleveland on Tuesday night.
Collin DuBose (two RBI), Adam Pate and Blake Sutton each had a hit for the Golden Falcons. Cameron Taylor supplied a sacrifice-fly.
Pate pitched a complete game to earn the win on the mound. He allowed two earned runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts and a walk.
Aycock (14-7 overall, 7-4 ECC) concludes regular-season play Thursday at Eastern Wayne.
North Lenoir 5,
South Johnston 2
* LaGRANGE -- Landon Letchworth threw a complete-game, one-hitter and North Lenoir defeated South Johnston 5-2 on Tuesday night.
Letchworth was one out away from a no-hitter before giving up a single. The left-hander finished with five strikeouts and three walks.
Chastin Radford paced the Hawks with two hits, including a home run, and two RBI. Brian Hardy added a two-run home run. Mikal Batts and Dylan Puchalski each had a hit.
North Lenoir (13-7 overall, 8-4 ECC) plays host to Kinston on Friday.
Ayden-Grifton 8,
Spring Creek 4
* AYDEN -- Ayden-Grifton broke open a close ballgame with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and went on to an 8-4 Carolina 1-A Conference win over Spring Creek on Tuesday night.
The Chargers' win and North Duplin's loss on Tuesday night at Princeton gave them sole possession of first place in the conference.
The Gators led 4-3 before the Chargers took the lead for good with two runs in the home half of the fourth inning.
Luke Miller led Spring Creek with three hits. Chad Spurgeon (two RBI), Duane Gurganus (RBI), Zack Harrell and Corey Howell each had a hit.
The Gators (12-8 overall, 5-2 CC) entertain Rosewood on Friday.
Princeton 3,
North Duplin 2 (11 inn.)
* PRINCETON -- Princeton pushed across the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning to slip past North Duplin 3-2 on Tuesday night.
No further details were reported.
"Both teams played really well," Rebels' head coach James Hobbs said. "We made some outstanding plays the whole game but we left too many on base and didn't get that big hit when we needed it."
Princeton (6-10 overall, 3-4 CC) plays host to Goldsboro on Thursday, while North Duplin (12-4, 4-2) entertains Ayden-Grifton on Friday.
Wayne Christian 7,
Cape Fear Christian 1
* Wayne Christian remained unbeaten in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play with a 7-1 win over Carolina Christian 1-A Conference rival Cape Fear Christian on Tuesday.
Chase Darden pitched a complete game and surrendered four hits to earn the win on the mound.
The Eagles play host to Grace Christian of Sanford on Thursday.
Rosewood 11,
Goldsboro 1
* Will Winslow crushed a two-run home run and Rosewood knocked off Carolina 1-A Conference rival Goldsboro 11-1 in five innings on Tuesday.
Brent Breedlove earned the pitching win, allowing one run on two hits and striking out seven 4 1/3 innings of work. Winslow threw the final two-thirds of an inning and finished the day with two hits.
The Cougars' Zach Falconer provided one hit and drove in the only run with a sacrifice fly.
Ronald Woody endured the mound loss.
The Cougars travel to Princeton on Thursday.
JV sports
* Baseball: Eastern Wayne 7, Southern Wayne 6 -- Brandon Johnson led the Warriors with three hits and Ryan Kelly had two hits. Johnson earned the win on the mound.
* Baseball: C.B. Aycock 9, Cleveland 0 -- Tim Naughton (two RBI), Jake Naughton (RBI) and Ryan Davis (RBI) each had two hits for the Golden Falcons. Hank Smitherman (two RBI), Garrett Joyner (two RBI), Ben Rouse (RBI), Conner Crandall, Noah West and Trent Herndon all had a hit. Jake Naughton earned the win on the mound with six shutout innings. Aycock (18-2) visits Greene Central today.
Middle schools
* Baseball: Wayne Christian 15, Cape Fear Christian 1 -- The Eagles pounded out 15 hits and Chandler Gentry collected the win on the mound. Wayne Christian begins Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament play Friday at Community Christian against Neuse Charter.
