Wayne Christian's Connor Jones and Clayton's Tim Holtzhauser claimed the 10K and 5K championships, respectively, during the Greater Goldsboro Race contested Saturday morning in downtown Goldsboro.

Jones, the 2011 N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A/2-A state champion, ran the course in 38 minutes, 9 seconds. New Bern's Eric Alvarez placed second in 39:20, followed by three Wayne County runners -- Grant Bloom of Goldsboro, David Eckenrod of Grantham and Kevin Vinson of Dudley.

Rosewood distance runner Travis Cuddington placed sixth in 44:42. Adrian McLawhorn (Clinton), Jon Britt (Grifton), Jeff Dukay and Neal Price (Pikeville) rounded out the top 10.

Holtzhauser covered the 5K course in 18:31.

Fellow Triangle-area runners Sean Kurdys (Raleigh), David Palmieri (Cary), Jeff Crume (Raleigh) and Jimmy Tang (Raleigh) completed the top five. Kurdys finished 11 seconds behind Holtzhauser.

Grantham residents Christian Martens and Jacob Seate took sixth and seventh, respectively. Raleigh's Susan Brosnan emerged the top women's runner in either event with an eighth-place time of 21:36.

Rocky Mount's Todd Finkbone and Goldsboro's Joshua Matias crossed the line ninth and 10th, respectively.

The early-morning race, which was contested under cloudy skies and cool temperatures, drew runners from throughout Wayne County and surrounding areas. Nearly 200 runners competed in the GGR this year.
