Wayne Christian did not just beat archrival Wayne Country Day on Monday night.
The Eagles sent a message.
Wayne Christian overcame an early deficit and rolled to a 13-3 victory in just five innings.
"I was really pleased with the way that every single guy in the lineup hit the ball," first-year Wayne Christian head coach Curt Hinton said. "We are a good-hitting team, so it was big for us to keep our heads up and stay confident even when we got behind."
Wayne Country Day opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning. Cody Neal led off with a triple and scored on a passed ball. Cole Davis and Hil Tanner delivered back-to-back singles, and the pair scored on Josh Jackson's double.
The Eagles took over from that point.
Wayne Christian scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning and took the lead with an eight-run outburst in the third frame.
Chase Darden led off with a single and Tanner Rose followed with a base hit. Bryce Norman drew a walk and two runs scored on a Wayne Country Day error. Chandler Harrell drew a walk and Austin Harrell reached on an error.
Brandon Price plated two runs with a single and Darden reached for the second time in the inning on a third Charger error that allowed two additional runs to score. Darden capped the rally by racing home on a wild pitch.
The 10-3 lead was more than enough for Chandler Harrell, who earned the mound win with 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
"Chandler did a great job and he saved us some innings for later in the week," Hinton said. "We need our seniors to take care of business on the mound and tonight we did that."
Wayne Christian scored two runs in the fourth inning and ended the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Mason Bland took the loss for the Chargers. Bland allowed four runs over two innings of work. The Chargers committed seven errors in the game.
Wayne Country Day head coach Michael Taylor chose not to comment on his team's play following the game.
Wayne Country Day (1-6 overall) plays host to Oakwood this afternoon, while Wayne Christian (6-1) entertains Trinity Academy of Raleigh.
