Four seniors took advantage of their last chance to grab a victory on their home floor.
Wayne Country Day used a huge first quarter to grab the lead and cruised to an 81-50 win over Coastal Plains Independent Conference opponent Faith Christian of Rocky Mount on Tuesday night.
"This group of guys in our senior class have been so successful over the past four years," Chargers head coach Terry Jones said. "This was the way we wanted to send them out. With an impressive performance and a win."
Wayne Country Day opened the game on fire from the field and stormed out to a 28-5 lead after the first quarter. The Chargers buried seven 3-point shots in the first half and consistently pressured the Patriots' guards into turnovers.
The lead ballooned to 40-18 by halftime.
"The last three or four games we have been just red hot shooting the basketball," Jones said. "At the beginning of the season we were struggling to get to 40 points as a team and lately we have been scoring that in a half."
Wayne Country Day increased its lead to 50-18 in the opening two minutes of the third quarter and allowed Jones to rotate his reserve players into the game.
Brandon McCarter led the Chargers with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow senior Hil Tanner added 21 points and grabbed five boards. Junior guard Deshar Thomas finished with 15 points.
Senior center Douglas Williams scored two points and senior swingman Aaron Forde had four points. The Chargers made 11 shots from behind the 3-point arc on the night.
"I thought our offense had good flow and we knocked down open looks," Jones said. "Any time you shoot like that from 3-point range it is a big advantage."
Christian Davis paced the Faith of Rocky Mount attack with 17 points.
Wayne Country Day (10-12 overall, 4-3 CPIC) concludes regular-season play Friday at nemesis Greenfield.
