Mike Knox honored by Apex High School

MOUNT OLIVE -- Four former Apex High School baseball players were honored at a halftime ceremony during the Cougars' home basketball game against Holly Springs.

Mount Olive College alum Michael Knox was joined by Tim Federowicz, Matt Mangini and Seth Frankoff -- who are all currently playing at the major or minor league level -- will be honored with a banner of their Apex jerseys that will be placed along the baseball field's outfield wall this spring.

Knox is a 2007 Apex graduate, who recently was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 41st round of the 2011 MLB Draft. Knox started his career at UNC-Chapel Hill, but transferred to Mount Olive where he shattered school records and was an all-American first baseman and designated hitter.

Knox re-wrote the record books for the Trojans, belting three home runs in a game three times and once blasting four against St. Andrews February 26, 2011. His 46 career home runs are also a school record and he owns the top two single-season home run records. In 2010, Knox set a school record with 94 RBI in a season.

After entering the Major League Baseball draft, Knox was selected by the Cardinals and was assigned to the team's Gulf Coast League squad where he appeared in 37 games, hitting five homers in 123 at-bats. He drove in 18 and batted .211.
