County swimmers fare well in annual meet

Bryce Connolly, Logan Cole and Zach Darden -- as usual -- churned through the water with ease during the Southeastern Intercollegiate Swimming Championship meet.

The trio collected five gold and three bronze medals during the day-long, 14-team event contested at the B.G. Darden Natatorium inside the Goldsboro Family Y.

Connolly, a senior at Charles B. Aycock, touched the wall first in the 200 free in 2 minutes, 7.28 seconds. She claimed the 100 free in 57.9 seconds.

Cole swam a leg on Goldsboro's 400 free relay that finished second overall in 3:55.05. The standout sprinter claimed first in the 50 free with a mark of 23.63 seconds and took second in the 100 fly.

Darden claimed top finishes in the 200 individual medley (IM) and 100 free, and also participated on the Cougars' 400 free relay.

Overall, county swimmers earned 14 medals on the day.

Southern Wayne's Chad Davis logged runner-up performances in the 200 free and 500 free. Goldsboro's Timmy Vick placed third in the 100 breaststroke, while Rosewood's Jessica Mitchell captured third in the 50 free.

Nash Central and Hunt secured the girls' and boys' team championships, respectively. Nash Central also received the team spirit award.

The SEIC is a meet designed to give high school swimmers an opportunity to swim in a prelim/final-formatted swim meet with automatic timing. The top two boys' and girls' teams received plaques to display in their respective schools, and swimmers who broke meet records received prizes.
