Simmons leads 3-A golf championships

FOXFIRE VILLAGE -- Charles B. Aycock junior Tara Simmons collected an opening-round 76 and emerged the first-day leader during the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A women's golf championships on Monday.
Simmons owns a six-stroke advantage over Northern Guilford senior Taylor Penzer and eight-stroke lead over Southwestern Randolph junior Rachel Jones. Fellow Golden Falcons Jessie Stewart and Jordyn Howell carded 18-hole scores of 114 and 123, respectively.
Aycock is seventh overall in the 12-team field.
At Southern Pines, Taylor Brock fired a team-low 107 and Rosewood ended up 12th overall among 13 teams during opening-day play in the NCHSAA 1-A/2-A championships at Longleaf Golf and Country Club.
Jennifer Liles complemented Brock with a 109, while Taylor Gales recorded a 119.
Princeton's Megan Heath and Lacyn Belk finished the day with scores of 106 and 112, respectively.
The 36-hole tournaments conclude today.
