Preps digest: Area volleyball teams begin playoffs Saturday

Volleyball

Five teams will see action

* Volleyball teams in the News-Argus readership area begin their respective quests for state championships when they serve up action in the 2011 N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs Saturday.

Eastern Carolina 3-A regular-season and tournament runner-up Charles B. Aycock (15-5 overall) plays host to Wilson Hunt at noon.

Carolina Conference regular-season and tournament champion Princeton (19-2) starts play in the 1-A ranks at home against East Carteret. Game time is 1 p.m.

Goldsboro (9-13) travels to Coastal Plains tri-champion Dixon, while Carolina tournament runner-up North Duplin (15-8) is the guest of Tri-County member Lakewood. Those matches begin at 2 p.m.

Rosewood plays host to Midway at 5 p.m.

JV football

Southern Wayne 22, North Lenoir 18

* LaGRANGE -- Matthew Holland caught the game-winning, 27-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Hollingsworth with fewer than four minutes to play in Southern Wayne's 22-18 win at North Lenoir on Thursday night.

Brion Kornegay had a 6-yard touchdown run and an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. A.J. Williams and Jalen Bennett each scored two-point conversions. Marquail Roddick recorded 12 tackles. Jackson Hayes, Jalen Roberts and Quintin Moore each had five tackles.

The Saints (3-5 overall) entertain Charles B. Aycock on Oct. 28.

Middle schools

* Football: Spring Creek d. Brogden 20-0 -- Sam Crocker led the Gators with 125 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Crocker, Michael Brown and Chase Fields each recorded five tackles. Spring Creek plays host to Norwayne on Oct. 27.

* Volleyball: Norwayne d. Eastern Wayne 12-25, 25-14, 17-25, 25-15, 18-16 -- Norwayne improved to 14-1 and entertains Eastern Wayne (10-2 overall) on Monday.

* Volleyball: Rosewood d. Greenwood 25-5, 25-7, 21-25, 25-10 -- Alyssa Garrison had nine aces and five kills for the Eagles. Rosewood (11-1 overall) plays host to Greenwood on Monday.

* Volleyball: Spring Creek d. Brogden 25-18, 19-25, 25-9, 25-18 -- Lexie Reyes led the Gators with 10 aces and three kills. Naomi Valdorinos had two aces and two kills.

* Soccer: Brogden d. Spring Creek 3-0 -- Cesar Venitez scored twice for Brogden. Victor Ponce scored added a goal. Brogden (10-0 overall) entertains Spring Creek on Monday.
