Girls' golf
Aycock claims ECC title
* SMITHFIELD -- Charles B. Aycock put the finishing touches on its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference girls' golf championship with a 288-347 triumph over South Johnston on the Country Club of Johnston County links Wednesday afternoon.
Golden Falcon junior Tara Simmons claimed medalist honors with an 80. Teammates Jessie Stewart and Jordyn Howell completed the team score with 18-hole rounds of 101 and 107, respectively.
Madison Aycock and Kristin Denning also played.
The Golden Falcons concluded the year 22-0 and return to action next Monday in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A east regional at Birchwood Country Club in Nashville. Play begins at 9 a.m.
Boys' soccer
North Lenoir 5, Eastern Wayne 4
* North Lenoir scored five goals in the second half and rallied for a 5-4 win over Eastern Wayne in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference finale for both squads on Wednesday.
Eastern Wayne held a 1-0 lead at the intermission before the North Lenoir offense broke loose.
Tyler Gray tied the game with the first of his two second half goals in the 45th minute. Oscar Navarette added two goals to push the Hawks ahead. Chastin Radford completed the Hawks tally with one marker.
North Lenoir (15-2-1 overall, 10-1-1 ECC) plays host to an opening-round game in the conference tournament Saturday. Eastern Wayne (4-13-0, 4-8) will travel, but the first-round opponent hasn't been determined.
C.B. Aycock 4, Southern Wayne 2
* DUDLEY -- Charles B. Aycock completed its run through the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference with a 4-2 overtime win over Southern Wayne on Wednesday night.
Tim Naughton got the Golden Falcons on the board in the 60th minute. Southern Wayne tied the game 1-1 in the final seconds of regulation, but could not hold back the C.B. Aycock attack. Naughton added second goal in overtime.
Trey Mallard and Kyle Powell completed the Golden Falcons' tally. Ronnie Person had three assists.
C.B. Aycock (15-6 overall, 6-6 ECC) plays host to Cleveland in an opening-round game in the ECC tournament Saturday at 5 p.m.. Southern Wayne travels to North Lenoir.
WCDS receives at-large bid
* BURLINGTON -- Wayne Country Day has earned an at-large bid to the 2011 N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs.
The Chargers (8-6-3 overall) drew the No. 12 seed and open tournament play at fifth-seeded Hickory Christian Academy.
A game time has not been announced.
Girls volleyball
Triton 3, C.B. Aycock 1
* ERWIN -- Charles B. Aycock could not hold on to early momentum in a 25-13, 19-25, 25-19, 25-16 loss to Triton in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference volleyball tournament championship game on Wednesday.
Meredith Burroughs led the Golden Falcons with 10 kills. Madison Mercer added nine kills and Connor Davis added seven. Brooke Bell led the C.B. Aycock defense as the libero.
C.B. Aycock (15-5 overall) opens the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A state playoffs at home Saturday against Wilson Hunt. First serve is noon.
