Girls' tennis
Wayne Country Day 5, Greenfield 4
* WILSON -- Mack Thompson clinched the overall outcome and Katherine Roethling climbed to 8-0 in doubles play this season during Wayne Country Day's 5-4 triumph over Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference nemesis Greenfield on Thursday afternoon.
The Chargers beat the Knights for the first time in three years.
Thompson emerged victorious in a third-set tiebreaker against Kenan Barnes at No. 3 singles. Roethling-Gianna Democko, the No. 2 doubles, rolled over Greenfield's tandem of Cameron Blair-Hannah Ferrell 8-2.
Sarah Best-Thompson claimed an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles.
Democko and Best each earned a singles point.
Wayne Country Day (10-1 overall, 4-1 CPIC) travels to Village Christian today.
Volleyball
Goldsboro 3, Ayden-Grifton 2
* Goldsboro earned a 25-16, 24-26, 25-16, 24-26,15-5 senior night win over Ayden-Grifton on Thursday. The victory tied the Cougars and Chargers for fourth place in the Carolina 1-A Conference.
Senior Kashieka Wallace hammered out 19 kills. Fellow senior Ana Harris handed out 16 assists to go with seven kills. Senior Yusely Lares distributed 11 assists. Latrice Burgess served four aces.
Dorian Wences and Yunely Lares were also recognized on senior night.
Goldsboro (8-12 overall, 3-7 CC) begins conference tournament play Monday against Ayden-Grifton.
C.B. Aycock 3, Southern Wayne 0
* DUDLEY -- Charles B. Aycock concluded its regular season with a 25-16, 25-15, 25-20 win at Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Southern Wayne on Thursday evening.
Connor Davis supplied 14 kills for the Golden Falcons. Madison Mercer contributed 12 kills and Brooke Bell had a solid floor game.
Aycock (13-4, 9-3 ECC) is the second seed for the ECC tournament and plays host to Eastern Wayne on Monday.
North Duplin 3, Spring Creek 1
* CALYPS0 -- North Duplin turned back Spring Creek 25-13, 14-25, 25-10, 25-11 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Thursday evening.
Tearra Ammons recorded nine aces, five digs, four kills and three blocks. Skylar McCarty added seven kills, five aces and two kills. Alonna Pate had four kills, three digs and three aces.
North Duplin (13-7 overall, 6-4 CC) entertains Spring Creek on Monday in opening-round play of the season-ending conference tournament.

Wayne Country Day 0
* FAYETTEVILLE -- Freedom Christian defeated Wayne Country Day 25-14, 25-22, 25-5 on Thursday evening.
Sarah Crooks contributed four aces, three digs and a kill for the Chargers. Bailee Creger finished with two aces, two digs and a kill. Jessica Zhou had seven digs, one kill and an ace.
Wayne Country Day (6-14 overall) plays host to Epiphany on Tuesday.
Boys' soccer
C.B. Aycock 2, Rosewood 0
* Charles B. Aycock bounced back from its loss at Eastern Wayne with a 2-0 non-conference win at Rosewood on Thursday night.
Trey Millard scored on a cross from Collin Zacharzuk in the 60th minute. Juan Pina increased the lead to 2-0 on a free kick in the 74th minute. Nick Hilker recorded eight saves in goal.
The Golden Falcons held a 14-8 advantage in shots on goal.
Aycock (10-5-0 overall) returns to Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play on Tuesday when it plays host to North Lenoir. Rosewood entertains Goldsboro on Monday.
Ayden-Grifton 6, Goldsboro 5
* LITTLEFIELD -- Jeffrey Martinez collected two goals and two assists, but it wasn't enough during Goldsboro's 6-5 loss to Ayden-Grifton in Carolina 1-A Conference play.
Damon Pate added two goals and one assist.
Osiel Valdes logged one goal. Ethan Minshew, Alan Bell and Peterson Innocent each provided one assist.
The Cougars visit Rosewood on Monday.
JV Football
Ayden-Grifton 36, Goldsboro 22
* Goldsboro's bid for a Carolina 1-A Conference championship came up short in a 36-22 loss to visiting Ayden-Grifton on Thursday night.
The Cougars' Rasheid Malette returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown and finished with 150 all-purpose yards. James Clyde had a 70-yard touchdown run for the Cougars. Horace Floyd added a 32-yard run for a score.
Jarod Fortson recorded eight tackles and a fumble recovery.
South Johnston 48, Southern Wayne 42
* FOUR OAKS -- Southern Wayne rushed for more than 380 yards on Thursday night, but it wasn't enough in a 48-42 loss at South Johnston.
A.J. Williams had 105 yards rushing for the Saints with touchdown runs of 54 and 2 yards. Xavier Pearsall gained 104 yards on the ground and had touchdown runs of 60 and 6 yards. Clayton Cashwell contributed 97 yards rushing and a two-point conversion. Brion Kornegay rushed for 75 yards, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Jacob Sasser threw a pair of two-point conversions.
Brendell Bass and Matt Holland both recorded interceptions. Cashwell and Gary Williams each made three solo tackles and assisted on five tackles.
Southern Wayne (2-5 overall) travels to North Lenoir on Oct. 20.
JV sports
* Volleyball: Princeton d. Rosewood 25-17, 25-12 -- Princeton claimed the Carolina 1-A Conference championship. The Bulldogs finished the season with a 14-1 record, including a 10-0 mark in conference play. Ashlynn Spell recorded eight digs for the Eagles. Jordan Martens provided four assists, three digs and an ace. Haylee Mercer had four blocks and two digs. Kayla Hardee supplied four digs.
* Volleyball: Freedom Christian d. Wayne Country Day 25-17, 25-21 -- Taylor Sledge served four aces for Wayne Country Day. Logan Harrell, Tiffany Larsen and Stephanie Schappell each had one ace. The Chargers (8-6, 5-3 CPIC) entertain Epiphany on Tuesday.
* Volleyball: C.B. Aycock d. Southern Wayne 25-15, 25-8 -- The Golden Falcons' (8-9 overall, 5-7 ECC) Courtney Warner finished with six kills.
Middle schools
* Football: Greenwood d. Brogden 14-6 -- Quarterback Joe Hayes had a 3-yard touchdown run for Greenwood. Toby Thomas contributed a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Greenwood travels to Rosewood on Oct. 20.
* Soccer: Brogden d. Greenwood 10-0 -- Cesar Venitez scored three goals for Brogden. Axel Venitzel supplied two goals. Jugo Gonzalez, Victor Ponce, Mauricio Velazquez, Eric Velazquez and Angel Zeniga each had a goal. Brogden (8-0-0 overall) visits Greenwood on Monday.
* Volleyball: Norwayne d. Grantham 25-6, 25-8, 25-11 -- Norwayne (12-1) travels to Grantham on Monday.
