Wayne Country Day soccer drops Oakwood

Hil Tanner, Trent Proimos and Douglas Williams needed a couple of minutes to start their senior day party Friday afternoon.

Their teammates soon joined in the fun.

Tanner set single-game career highs for goals (five) and points (12) in Wayne Country Day's 8-1 dismantling of Oakwood in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference boys' soccer contest. In all, six players scratched in the scoring column for the Chargers, who improved to 8-5-3 overall and swept the regular-season series from the Eagles.

The area's leading scorer, Tanner boosted his season totals to 31 goals, seven assists and 69 total points.

"I was just making good runs," said Tanner. "Jacob (Parks) and Cody (Neal) played perfect through balls to me and I was just finishing."

The Eagles (3-11-0) scored in the third minute when Steven Mori-Chavez squeezed a goal between WCDS keeper Zach Brewer-Kirby and the near post.

"We didn't let it get to us," said Proimos.

Indeed.

Proimos beat an Oakwood defender to a loose ball at midfield and slipped a pass through to Tanner, who made a run down the right sideline. Tanner dribbled into the box and fired a right-footed shot that deflected off the opponent into the net.

Nearly 11 minutes later, Proimos notched his second assist of the afternoon on Miller Gerard's goal. Tanner and Neal connected in the 17th minute, and Parks assisted Tanner in the 25th minute.

Neal notched WCDS' final goal of the opening half off an assist from Tanner.

"We started off a little bit flat from the very beginning, but once we got the ball rolling and got that first goal, we took the momentum and kept going with it," said Chargers head coach Scott Summers. "I think the boys played a great game, spreading the field and finding our outside guys who were making runs in and that's how we got a couple of goals.

"When Hil's on, that's great for us because our players look up to him. (But) it's a team effort. The boys worked together and we found him, and he finished the opportunities."

Tanner scored twice in the second half and assisted on Li Fengru's goal around the 59th minute. WCDS finished with 22 shots on frame.

Williams played strong on the defensive end, and helped disrupt the Eagles' attack by intercepting passes and pushing them forward to his teammates.
