Cross country
Rebels' Wilkins claims first
* North Duplin's Samantha Wilkins crossed the finish line first in 25 minutes, 27 seconds during the third Carolina 1-A Conference girls' cross country meet contested on a humid Wednesday afternoon at Rosewood High School.
Princeton's Megan Evans claimed runner-up honors in 26:02, followed by Goldsboro's Tiara Maynor, who posted a time of 26:58. Rosewood's Charleigh Smith and Princeton's Taylor Smith completed the top five in 27:08 and 27:14, respectively.
The Eagles claimed the team portion with 38 points. The Bulldogs took second with 52, followed by North Duplin (65), Goldsboro (89) and meet guest Midway (97).
"Charleigh and Ashley Duran (seventh place) have been steadily improving each week and as first-year runners they are showing a lot of promise," said Rosewood head coach David Younts. "Our girls' team really works well together. Any one of our seven runners could lead our team week in and week out, and our depth has been the driving force of our success."
Midway's Caleb Sanders claimed the boys' meet in 18:53.
The Eagles' Nick Britt took second in 19:11, while Midway's Michael McLamb secured third in 19:24. Spring Creek's Allen Coor (19:34) and Princeton's Will Toler (19:39) ended up fourth and fifth, respectively.
Victor Prezbindowski emerged Goldsboro's top finisher with a ninth-place time of 20:22. Francisco Quirino led North Duplin with a 13th-place effort of 20:45.
Midway edged Princeton 41-40 in the team portion, but the Dogs seized the top spot with 27 points among competing Carolina Conference squads. Spring Creek grabbed second in league action with 72 points, followed by North Duplin (76), Rosewood (77) and Goldsboro (113).
The teams run again next Wednesday in Seven Springs.
Girls' tennis
C.B. Aycock 7, Wilson Hunt 2
* WILSON -- C.B. Aycock claimed five singles points en route to a 7-2 win over Wilson Hunt on Wednesday.
Brooke Barfield, Ashton Walker, Katie Gurley, Misty Edwards and Caroline Bone each prevailed in singles play for the Golden Falcons.
The tandems of Barfield-Walker and Gurley-Edwards each claimed a point in doubles action.
C.B. Aycock (18-0 overall) travels archrival Eastern Wayne today with first place on the line in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play. The Golden Falcons won the previous meeting 9-0.
Volleyball
North Duplin 3, Union 1
* CALYPSO -- North Duplin avenged an early-season loss to Union with a four-set victory on Wednesday aftrernoon. The Rebels prevailed 22-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-15.
Tearra Ammons paced the North Duplin attack with 15 kills. Hannah Brock dished out 33 asists and Danielle Hinrichs served nine aces en route to the win.
North Duplin (10-5 overall) begins second-half Carolina 1-A Conference play at Goldsboro today. First serve is 6 p.m.
Boys' soccer
North Lenoir 3, Cleveland 1
* LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 3-1 win over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Cleveland on Wednesday night.
Tyler Gray collected a pass from Oscar Navarette and fired a shot into the net in the 18th minute to open the scoring. Navarette added a goal in the 53rd minute off a pass from Justin Shimer, and closed the Hawks' tally with a goal in the 70th minute that was the end result of a free kick by Wilmar Gonzalez.
Caleb Baird finished with eight saves in goal for the Hawks.
North Lenoir (10-2 overall, 5-1 ECC) travels Southern Wayne tonight at 7 p.m.
C.B. Aycock 4, Triton 3, OT
* ERWIN -- Charles B. Aycock won its third consecutive game, a 4-3 overtime decision against Triton on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference soccer scene Wednesday night.
Collin Zacharzuk recorded a hat trick (three goals) including the game-winning score in the fourth minute of overtime. Chase Thompson scored the Golden Falcons' other goal in the win.
Brian Johnson, Bailee Lynch and Juan Pina each tallied one assist.
C.B. Aycock (8-3-0 overall, 4-3-0 ECC) entertains North Lenoir on Monday.
Spring Creek 4, Princeton 0
* PRINCETON -- Spring Creek delivered a strong defensive performance in a 4-0 win over Carolina 1-A Conference foe Princeton on Wednesday night.
The Gators got two goals from Antonio Avila, and one goal apiece from Brian Soto and David Vega.
Spring Creek plays host to Rosewood on Monday, while Princeton concludes first-half conference play at Ayden-Grifton.
Wayne Country Day 5, Oakwood 1
* GREENVILLE -- Hil Tanner registered a hat trick (three goals) and assisted on a goal in Wayne Country Day's 5-1 victory over The Oakwood School in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play.
Li Fengru scored off Tanner's assist.
Gerard Miller added one goal. Danny Lee and Cody Neal each handed out one assist.
The Chargers (5-3-3 overall, 2-2-0 CPIC) entertain The Epiphany School today and CPIC "charter" member Freedom Christian on Friday.
