MOUNT OLIVE -- Frank Boateng notched the game-winning goal in the 76th minute, and Mount Olive College slipped past in-state rival Chowan University, 2-1, in a men's non-conference soccer match.
The Trojans rose to 2-6-0 overall this season.
Mount Olive broke a scoreless tie at the 26-minute, 19-second mark when Vieux Sarr found a wide-open Murilo Pelegrino in the box. Pelegrino had time to settle before scoring from 15 yards out to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Chowan (0-6-0) got on the scoreboard in the 66th minute after a Mount Olive foul led to a restart deep in the Trojan half. Biez Neto crossed to Adam Smith, who scored from just outside the right post to even the match at 1-1.
Late in the second half, Tyler Jameson played the ensuing goal kick to midfield, where Ramon Gallardo flicked the ball ahead to Boateng. Boateng got ahead of the Hawks' defense and scored from 18 yards out to put the Trojans back on top.
After Boateng's go-ahead goal, Chowan appeared to again tie the match in the 80th minute, but the goal was waved off for offside.
Porter leads MOC
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Sarah Porter scored twice, while Lindsey Stanley added goal and an assist in Mount Olive's 3-0 shutout of Converse (S.C.) College on the Conference Carolinas women's soccer scene.
Porter gave the Trojans, ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region poll, all the offense it needed just four minutes into the match. Her fifth goal of the season came off an assist from Stanley and paved the way for goalkeeper Lyndsey McIntyre's third shutout in four matches. McIntyre finished with five saves.
Mount Olive (4-1-1 overall, 3-0-0 CC) got plenty of insurance before intermission. Porter added an unassisted goal at the 29:44 mark, then Porter found Stanley just before halftime to provide the final cushion.
