Girls' tennis
Spring Creek 5, Southern Wayne 4
* DUDLEY -- Spring Creek claimed a pivotal point at No. 3 doubles and hung on for a 5-4 non-conference win at Southern Wayne on Tuesday afternoon.
Emily Daniel, Anna Haggerty, Colleen Finlay and Brittany Carmack each contributed a singles victory for the Gators.
After the Saints won the first two doubles points to even the match at 4-4, Finlay-Carmack defeated the Saints' tandem of Brittany O'Brien-Kelsey Vasquez for the decisive point at No. 3 singles.
Taylor Davis and Mollianne Kennedy both collected singles victories for Southern Wayne. The doubles teams of Taylor Parker-Davis and Kennedy-Hope Rose were also victorious for the Saints.
Southern Wayne begins Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play at Triton on Thursday. Spring Creek opens Carolina 1-A Conference play against Goldsboro on Sept. 8.
C.B. Aycock 9, Beddingfield 0
* ERWIN -- Charles B. Aycock opened Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play with a 9-0 win at Triton on Tuesday afternoon.
Brooke Barfield, Ashton Walker, Katie Gurley, Brittany Parrish, Misty Edwards and Caroline Bone all recorded a singles point. The doubles teams of Barfield-Walker, Gurley-Edwards and Parrish-Bone also prevailed.
Aycock (4-0 overall, 1-0 ECC) visits Wilson Fike today.
Greene Central 9, Beddingfield 0
* Greene Central launched its 2011 Eastern Plains 2-A Conference campaign with a dominating, 9-0 performance over Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday afternoon.
The Rams (2-3 overall, 1-0 EPC) did not drop a game to the Bruins.
Jessica Hatch, Kayla Radford, Brittany Colie, Hayes Lovett, Danielle Dillane and Chasity Holloman each claimed a singles point. Hatch-Lovett, Colie-Radford and Dillane-Holloman cruised to 8-0 decisions in their respective doubles matches.
Volleyball
Wayne Christian 3, Epiphany 2
* NEW BERN -- Wayne Christian survived a hard fought battle at Epiphany and pulled out a 23-25, 25-19, 22-25, 26-24, 15-7 win on Tuesday evening in a match that lasted more than two hours.
Eagles' senior Jessica Swets contributed 13 kills, seven aces and two blocks. Fellow senior Britney O'Hara contributed 18 digs and 13 kills. Haley Greenwood supplied 14 digs and four aces. Carly Hightower had eight kills and four aces while Katie Isenhower distributed 30 assists.
The Eagles play host to Wayne Country Day on Thursday.
North Johnston 3, North Duplin 0
* CALYPS0 -- North Duplin suffered a 25-8, 25-23, 25-12 non-conference loss to North Johnston on Tuesday evening.
The Rebels play host to Union today.
Cross country
Eagles prevail
* NEW BERN -- Wayne Christian placed four male runners in the top seven and claimed a five-team meet at Creekside Park on Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles' Connor Jones finished first with a time of 16 minutes, 51 seconds. Teammate Spencer Foster was fourth in 20:23 and Mark Sawyer was fifth at 20:26. Wayne Christian's David Swets crossed the finish line in seventh place with a time of 21:26.
The Eagles recorded a team score of 29 to finish just ahead of Epiphany's 30 points. Pope John Paul (96), Parrott Academy (153) and Wayne Country Day (no team score) rounded out the team scoring.
Sarah Allen, Wayne Christian's lone female runner, finished with a time of 25:26. The Eagles compete again Friday at Grace Christian.
Boys' soccer
Community Christian 3,
Wayne Country Day 2
* WILSON -- Wayne Country Day missed several scoring chances and dropped a 3-2 decision to Community Christian.
Senior striker Hil Tanner converted a penalty kick in the 28th minute for the Chargers. It was Tanner's fourth goal of the season.
Trent Proimos scored in the 53rd minute off Jack Langston's assist.
"We are not finishing opportunities," said first-year WCDS coach Scott Summers said. "We had three one-on-ones against the keeper, but didn't put them away. Those are game changers."
The Chargers (0-1-2 overall) travel to county rival Wayne Christian on Thursday. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
Golf
Walnut Creek Ladies Association
* Hiromi Sueki claimed low gross accolades in first flight play on the Walnut Creek Country Club links. Mary Morris and Faye Franklin secured low net and low putts, respectively, in first flight.
Penny Ritt captured low gross for second flight. Betty Holloway took low net, while Nancy Aichele seized low putts.
