SEATTLE -- Carter Capps is officially a Seattle Mariner.

A third-round selection in the 2011 Major League Baseball first-year player draft, Capps signed a contract and reports to the club's Class A affiliate Clinton (Iowa) today.

"Carter is a big, physical kid with a power arm potential," said Tom McNamara, the Seattle Mariners' director of amateur scouting. "He had a great college season as a starter and continued his success in the Cape Cod League.

"Bottom line is, he is a strike thrower with tremendous potential."

An All-American from Kinston, Capps earned pitcher-of-the-year accolades from three different national organizations this past spring. He was selected the 2011 ABCA player of the year and was named a 2011 CoSIDA/Capital One Academic First-Team All-American.

Capps logged a 4-1 record and 0.60 earned run average (ERA) in 16 appearances -- all in relief -- with the Harwich (Mass.) Mariners in Cape Cod League play. He collected 34 strikeouts and walked just two in 30 innings of work, and struck out the side in a one-inning stint during the Cape Cod League All-Star game at Fenway Park in late July.
