PIKEVILLE -- Nash County -- again -- capitalized on defensive mistakes and claimed a come-from-behind, 8-7 victory over Wayne County in elimination-round play of the 2011 Eastern N.C. Babe Ruth 13-year-old state baseball tournament Sunday evening.
Nash County faces Lumberton for the state title today. First pitch is 4 p.m. at Charles B. Aycock High School.
Wayne County led 5-3 heading into the top of the seventh, but committed four errors and one passed ball. Nash County plated five runs and defeated the host team for a second time in four days.
Trent Herndon belted a two-run triple and Kyler Bradley added two hits in the season-ending loss. Caleb Smith drove in a run, while Kyle Davis batted 1-for-3 and scored two runs.
Herndon and Allen Coor combined for a seven-hitter as Wayne County topped New Bern, 6-2, earlier in the day. Herndon, who seized the mound win, permitted two earned runs on six hits in four innings of work. Coor tossed three innings of one-hit, one-strikeout relief.
Coor paced the offense with three hits and three runs scored. Jacob Dubose added two hits, including a double.
