MOREHEAD CITY -- A new state champion will be crowned when the 2011 N.C. Senior American Legion basball state tournament begins Friday morning at Puck O'Neal Field inside Big Rock Stadium.

Kernersville Post 36, which advanced to the World Series last season, didn't make the eight-team field.

Wayne County Post 11 opens tournament action at 10 a.m. against perennial power Rowan County. Wayne County (25-5 overall) is making its first state tournament appearance since 2008, and was the state runner-up to Cherryville in 2007.

In other first-round games, High Point faces Area I runner-up Cary at 1 p.m.; Hickory battles Area II champ Wilmington at 4:30 p.m. and tournament host Morehead City opposes perennial Area IV powerhouse Cherryville at 7 p.m.

Tournament passes are $25 and admission is $10 at the gate each day.

The state champion qualifies for the Southeast Regional, which will be contested in Sumter, S.C.
