MOUNT OLIVE -- Major League draftee Carter Capps continues racking up postseason awards after leading Mount Olive to its second appearance in the NCAA Division II College World Series.
Capps was named the Conference Carolinas male athlete-of-the-year Monday. The North Lenoir alum becomes the third Trojan to earn the honor along with Sam Mitchell (2007-08) and Jason Sherrer (2007-08).
Mitchell also won the league's Murphy Osborne Award.
Selected by the Seattle Mariners in the supplemental draft, Capps posted a 24-1 record during his career at MOC. The right-hander exited with the NCAA Division II mark for consecutive wins (24) and was among the nation's leaders in wins (14), strikeouts (129) and earned run average (1.75) this season.
Capps compiled a 3.57 grade-point average in the classroom and majored in environmental science. He was named the pitcher-of-the-year by three different organizations this spring, and is currently playing for the Harwich (Mass.) Mariners of the Cape Cod League.
