Mulligan claims state discus title

* CHARLOTTE -- Wayne Christian senior Anthony Mulligan became the second individual state champion in the school's athletics program history with a first-place effort in the season-ending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A/2-A track and field championships.

Mulligan threw the discus a meet-winning 116 feet, 4 inches.

Faith Sutton became the school's first-ever individual champion when she claimed the state crown at the No. 2 flight in the NCISAA 1-A women's tennis tournament last fall.

Mulligan helped the Eagles' 400-meter relay take ninth on the day. He was joined by Connor Jones, Chase King and David Swets. Jones, a freshman, claimed sixth in the 800 and seventh in the 1,600.

King, a senior, was 11th in the 300-meter hurdles. Camren Gavontes took 10th in the triple jump, and teammate Brendan Rouse was 10th in the shot put.

On the girls' side, junior Jessica Swets placed seventh in the discus and 10th in the 100-meter dash. Summer Brathwaite, a senior three-sport athlete, was eighth in the discus and 10th in the shot put.

Morgan Matthews and Rebecca James captured ninth and 12th, respectively, in the 100-meter hurdles. Seventh-grader Hunter Kaler recorded an eighth-place distance in the triple jump. Kaler competed on the sixth-place, 400-meter relay along with Brathwaite, Matthews and Swets.

Wayne Christian's boys placed 15th in the team competition, while the girls were 17th overall.

Montgomery is state runner-up

* GREENSBORO -- Andre Montgomery, Devin Oliver and Sean Stallings represented the Carolina Conference well during the season-ending N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A track and field championships contested at N.C. A&T State University.

Goldsboro High School's Montgomery, the Mideast Regional champion, finished the state runner-up in the shot put with a toss of 47 feet, six inches. Oliver, from North Duplin, posted a third-place time (10.47 seconds) in the 100-meter dash.

Spring Creek's Stallings clocked a third-place time of 51.36 in the 400 after finishing fourth in his heat earlier in the day.

Rosewood's Ricky Donahue ended up sixth in the pole vault with a distance of 111/2 feet. Princeton's Javantae Davis placed eighth in the triple jump, and ran the second leg on the Dogs' 400-meter relay that claimed ninth.

On the girls' side, the Eagles' 1,600-meter relay of Elise McSwain, Armani Perry, Alysse Atwell and Crystal Allen took ninth overall. Allen secured 12th-place honors in the long jump (14-10 1/2).

Spring Creek's Sara Boltinhouse turned in a 14th-place time in the 800. Princeton's Amber Brush was 12th in the discus, while Goldsboro's Jade Dansler placed 15th in the shot put.

Boys' tennis

Knutson named CPIC's best

* WILSON -- Michael Knutson earned the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference men's tennis player-of-the-year award after top-two finishes in singles and doubles play during the season-ending tournament.

Knutson lost to Oakwood's Ravi Tewari in the singles final at the No. 1 flight. The tandem of Knutson-Miller Gerrard returned later in the day to dispatch Oakwood's Tewari-Jackson Sears, 8-6, in the doubles final.

Jack Langston prevailed as the CPIC champion at the No. 2 singles flight with back-to-back triumphs over Faith Christian-Rocky Mount's John Brown and Oakwood's Jason Howell.

Knutson, Langston, Gerrard and Douglas Williams earned All-CPIC accolades. Teammates Sunny Sandhu, Will Martin, Luke Johnson and Griffin Creech also competed in the tournament.

Knutson and Williams each claimed a singles win during the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A championships. Knutson eased past Wayne Christian's Chris Easom and fell to Elon's Tyler Schofer in the second round.

Williams handed Lawrence Academy's Kelby Roerson an opening-round, straight-set loss at the No. 4 singles flight. Williams stumbled against Elon's Charlie Holt in the second round.
