PIKEVILLE -- After leading the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference standings for the majority of the softball season, it appears C.B. Aycock will have to settle for a share of the regular season championship.

South Johnston scored three runs on seven hits and defeated the Golden Falcons 3-1 on Friday night. The win moves the two teams into a tie atop the league. Unless a major upset occurs in the next two weeks the two squads will split the title.

"We just didn't swing the bats tonight," Golden Falcons head coach Brad Matthews said. "We had four hits, but one was a bunt and two were bloop singles. We only hit one ball hard all night."

South Johnston hurler Kaitlyn Barbour held the home team in check throughout the game. The Golden Falcons only run was an unearned marker in the final inning. Barbour finished with eight strikeouts and just two walks.

Whitney Williams delivered a pair of RBI base hits for the Trojans in the first and third innings respectviely. Kristen Jernigan added an RBI base hit in the fifth as the visitors built a 3-0 lead.

Connor Davis led the C.B. Aycock attack with two hits, including a double.

Brooke Bell suffered the loss in the pitcher's circle for the Golden Falcons despite striking out 14 batters and allowing just seven hits.

"Brooke pitched a great game, she really hit her spots most of the night," Matthews said. "But it was one of those games where the offense never got on track and we got behind early. We have had a few comebacks this year but not tonight."

C.B. Aycock (11-4 overall, 8-1 ECC) will travel to Cleveland High School on Tuesday.
