Rosewood freshman Nick Adams is not old enough to legally drive an automobile.
Despite that fact, Adams has already left the rest of the Carolina 1-A Conference in his rear view mirror on the golf course.
Adams carded five birdies and no bogeys en route to a 5-under par 65 on the sun-soaked links at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course on Wednesday afternoon. The low round of the day not only claimed medalist honors, it also set a conference record.
"I felt pretty good all day because I was really hitting my driver well," Adams said. "I think it's a big advantage to play on our home course and to play in a place where I am so comfortable."
Powered by Adams' round, the Eagles also set a new school record with a four-man score of 298. Breaking the 300 barrier is a feat that few teams ever accomplish, a fact that was not lost on Rosewood head coach Daniel Baynes.
"I never thought we would ever get under 300," Baynes said. "I thought we would be strong, but I was nowhere near ready to throw out a number like 298."
Tyler Dean (76), Blake Weaver (78), Bret Robinson (79) and Andrew Henn (79) rounded out the Eagles' team total.
Adam's round overshadowed an excellent showing by Spring Creek's Paul Sullivan who fired an even-par 70. The Gators added Jordan Edwards' round of 82 as well as scores by James Lancaster (89) and Justin Casey (97) for a 338 total.
Ayden-Grifton finished third in the team standings with a 370 total.
Princeton finished in fourth place with a 372 total. Ryne Woodard paced the Dawgs with a total of 86. James Boring (94), Joel Hines (95) and Cody Price (101) rounded out the Princeton team score.
North Duplin came home in fifth place with a 375 total led by Phillip Holland's round of 88. Goldsboro finished in sixth with a 395 score, paced by Jeff Johnson's 89.
The next Carolina meet is April 13 at GMGC.
