GREENVILLE -- Southern Wayne had a home run dissallowed and never recovered in a 13-3, non-conference loss to J.H. Rose as part of the Pitt County-Wayne County Challenge at Guy Smith Stadium on Saturday.
With the game tied at 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning, Southern Wayne outfielder Jaime Dove belted an apparent home run to give the Saints the lead. After a discussion between the J.H. Rose catcher and the home plate umpire, the Rampants appealed the play and the umpire ruled that Dove missed home plate.
"That was dissapointing, but I told the guys that we have to control the things that we can control," said Southern Wayne head coach Trae McKee. "We walked nine batters and hit two more. Those are the things that we need to get corrected."
Taylor Brock and Zach Grantham each hit a home run for the Saints in the loss. Cody Davis added a double.
Southern Wayne (1-1 overall) plays host to Rocky Mount on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
