CHARLOTTE -- Derek Staton sizzled the nets for a career-high 30 points, but Mount Olive College endured an 89-87, overtime loss to Conference Carolinas men's basketball rival Queens University on Wednesday evening.
The Royals' Brent Evans nailed the game-winning basket with 4.6 seconds to play and handed the Trojans their ninth loss in league play this season.
Brandon Allen complemented Staton with a 17-point, eight-rebound effort. Ewon Wright scored 18 points. Mahamed Ibrahim contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots.
Staton scored the Trojans' first seven points in overtime.
Tied at 85-85 with 75 seconds left to play, the Royals' Reggie Hopkins made two free throws. White drew a foul on a defensive rebound and hit two free throws, which knotted the game at 87-87.
Queens' Sean Eads drove the lane and missed a layup, but Evans was there to grab the offensive rebound and put the ball back in for the Royals' game-winning basket.
Mount Olive (13-12 overall, 8-9 CC) concludes regular-season play at home Saturday against in-state rival St. Andrews. The Knights won the previous meeting. Tip-off is 4 p.m.
Women
CHARLOTTE -- Andrea Jones and Laporsha Davis emerged Mount Olive's offensive leaders in a 72-57 setback against Queens University on the Conference Carolinas women's basketball scene Wednesday evening.
Jones pumped in 19 points and Davis added 18 for the Trojans, who had their six-game win streak snapped.
Queens owned a commanding 64-28 advantage on the board and out-scored Mount Olive 20-8 from the free throw line. The Royals attempted 25 shots from the foul stripe compared to just 12 for the Trojans.
The Royals led by 13 points with 12:29 to play when Mount Olive mounted its second comeback of the game.
Jones scored nine points and Davis added the other five to comprise a 14-4 run that pulled the Trojans within three at 51-48 with 7:29 to go. But two Marissa Hudley free throws, a three-point play by Shonice Pettaway and a jumper by Dyonna Battle made up a 7-0 run for Queens that put the Royals comfortably back in front by double-digits again with 5:30 to go.
The Trojans (18-7 overall, 15-4 CC) return home for their regular-season finale Saturday against winless St. Andrews.
Tip-off is 2 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
