Hines sets single-game assists record in MOC victory

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive freshman Dory Hines handed out a school-record 16 assists, while Brandon Allen and Derek Staton provided the offensive punch in a 96-84 shootout over Lees-McRae on Saturday evening.

Hines broke the record (15) set by Staton last season. The Kinston High alum collected 11 points for third double-double of the season. He also had four rebounds and a game-high four steals.

Allen and Staton poured in 26 points apiece for the Trojans, who played before a Church Night capacity crowd of 1,200-plus fans at Kornegay Arena. Ewon Wright provided 13 points. Mahamed Ibrahim supplied 12 points and a career-high three blocked shots.

Allen pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

Allen scored the first five points of the game and Mount Olive (13-11 overall, 8-8 CC) led the remainder of the contest. The Trojans took their first double-digit lead at 16-6 on Aleks Mitrovic's basket with 11:47 left in the first half.

The lead grew to as many as 14 after Ibrahim's 3-pointer with 9:20 left made the score 22-8. Lees-McRae (6-17, 2-13) got as close as 11 points in the final minute of play.

The Trojans return to action Wednesday at Queens.

Women

MOUNT OLIVE -- Jasmine Whitby notched her 12th double-double of the season with 26 points and 10 rebounds, and Mount Olive overcame a double-digit deficit to defeat in-state rival Lees-McRae, 79-57, on Saturday evening.

Whitby was 9 for 11 from the field and 8 for 10 from the free throw line for the Trojans, who claimed their sixth consecutive Conference Carolinas victory. Teammate Laporsha Davis finished with 11 points, while Joneiqua Gary added 10 points.

Destinee Webb, who scored seven points, finished with game highs of five assists and four steals. Alyssa Luebs pulled down seven rebounds as the Trojans outrebounded Lees-McRae 38-23.

A near-capacity crowd of 1,107 fans attended the 28th annual MOC Basketball Church Night, which was played in conjunction with the "Pink Zone Night," sponsored by the WBCA. The occasion raised funds and awareness in the fight against breast cancer and donations were collected for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Players, coaches and fans wore pink in support of the event.

The Bobcats grabbed an 18-8 advantage early in the opening half. The Trojans (18-6 overall, 15-3 CC) rallied for a 24-24 tie on Webb's two free throws, and took the lead for good on Brittany Miller's jumper.
