Greenfield boys defeat WCDS, repeat as CPIC tournament champs

Greenfield doesn't just have Wayne Country Day's number in basketball, it might even be on speed dial.
The Knights placed five players in double figures and cruised to a 78-50 victory on Saturday night in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference boys' basketball tournament finals. Greenfield has won 10 of the last 11 CPIC tournaments.
The Knights wasted little time forcing the Chargers into an up-tempo, transition game which led to fast-break opportunities for Greenfield. All-tournament selection Aaron Roundtree's three-point-play gave the Knights an early 8-1 lead.
Deandre Alston's 3-pointer at the buzzer put Greenfield in front 18-8 at the end of the first quarter. The margin grew to 36-20 at the half while Wayne Country Day forward Brandon McCarter watched from the bench with three fouls.
"They're clearly much better than we are," said Chargers' head coach Terry Jones. "Right now, unfortunately, we're not a very good team. You can have a bad game here or there, but when they come in sequence you're headed in the wrong direction. We're definitely headed that way."
Wayne Country Day provided little resistance in the second half. Roundtree threw down a dunk in transition and Alston's 3-pointer stretched the deficit to 57-30 after three quarters.
"I felt like our effort was there a to degree," said Jones. "Offensively, I thought we were settling for the long shot, which if you're not hitting it's not a very high-percentage shot. They're just clearly the better team."
Sam Hughes, the tournament's MVP, led the Knights with 22 points. Roundtree provided 15 points and Logan Sneed had 14. Alston and Jordan Sharpe added 13 and 10 points respectively.
Josh Gregory finished with 22 points for the Chargers, who had just four players to score. Tyson Pearson supplied 19 points. Gregory and Pearson were both named to the all-tournament team, and were joined by McCarter and Hil Tanner on the all-conference team.
Wayne Country Day (14-9) begins play in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A state playoffs on Tuesday.
