Goldsboro played another up and down game.
A big night by a big man helped the Cougars prevail.
Jarran Reed celebrated senior night by scoring 24 points and grabbing eight rebounds, and the Cougars held off a pesky Rosewood squad 62-54 on Wednesday night.
If the Cougars win their regular season finale at Ayden-Grifton on Friday night they can clinch at least a share of the Carolina 1-A Conference title.
Reed was the man that kept Goldsboro on track.
"Jarran has really done a great job of simplifying his game," Goldsboro head coach Patrick Reynell said. "His greatest asset is his size and his quick feet. For a 300-pound guy he has amazing feet."
The Eagles hung around in the first half behind some hot outside shooting from Shane Whitley and good post defense from Jacquez Raynor. At the intermission the Cougars only carried a one-point lead.
A three-point shot from Whitley and a driving layup by Antonio Henriquez gave the Eagles a four-point lead in the third quarter.
Then Reed took over.
Three consecutive baskets, two off of offensive rebounds, put the Cougars back ahead for good. Devonte White added a driving layup and Moses Ramsey hit a long three-pointer that capped a 9-0 Goldsboro run.
"That one bad stretch was really what got us in the third quarter," Rosewood head coach Daniel Mitchell said. "We didn't have an answer for their big guy, and we had a string of about four possessions where we either turned it over or took a bad shot."
White added 13 points in the win for the Cougars. James Wiiliams added seven markers.
"It was just another game in this conference," Reynell said. "I think every team in this league has shown that they can play well on any given night. I really like Rosewood's style and I was glad that we were able to use our energy to win the ballgame."
Rosewood was paced by Raynor and Dee Mabry, who each finished with 11 points respectively. Whitley finished with nine points.
Rosewood will host archrival Princeton on Friday night.
