Goldsboro clears glass against Spring Creek, pulls down season-high 49 rebounds

Boys' basketball

Goldsboro 53, Spring Creek 49

* SEVEN SPRINGS -- Goldsboro overcame an eight-point deficit at halftime and rallied to beat Carolina 1-A Conference rival Spring Creek 53-49 on Tuesday night.

The Cougars asserted themselves on the defensive glass in the second half and cleared 49 rebounds as a team.

"Spring Creek's game plan was very good tonight," said Goldsboro head coach Patrick Reynell. "In the second half we came out and were able to control the game with our big guys hitting the glass."

Devonte White paced the Cougars offense with 24 points. Robert Kornegay added 12 points. James Williams collected nine points and 15 rebounds.

Deshar Thomas led the Gators with 20 points.

Spring Creek will play host to North Duplin on Friday night. Goldsboro (14-6 overall, 7-1 CC) entertains Rosewood tonight.

Rosewood 59, North Duplin 50

* CALYPSO -- Rosewood used a sterling fourth quarter to overcome North Duplin 59-50 on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene Tuesday.

The Eagles scored 27 points in the final eight minutes to put the game away.

Zach Thornton led the balanced Rosewood offense with 13 points. Antonio Henriques tallied 11 points and Jacquez Raynor added 10 points.

James Kornegay paced the Rebels with 16 points. Breyon Johnson added 13 points.

North Duplin travels to Spring Creek on Friday, while Rosewood is the guest of Goldsboro tonight.

Princeton 77, Ayden-Grifton 47

* PRINCETON -- Princeton rolled to an early lead and never looked back en route to a 77-47 win over Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday night.

Ben Jacobs paced the Dawgs with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Justin Foy added 14 points and C.J. Jeffreys contributed 12 points and eight assists.

Trey Fleary led the Chargers with 21 points.

Princeton (21-1 overall, 8-1 CC) concludes regular-season play Friday at archrival Rosewood.

Northwood Temple 49, Wayne Christian 26

* FAYETTEVILLE -- Wayne Christian concluded its season with a 49-26 loss to Northwood Temple in the opening round of the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament on Tuesday night.

Tyler Mooring led the Eagles with eight points and five rebounds. Jordan Crouthamel added five points in the defeat.

Chase King was selected to play in the CCC All-Star game on Saturday.

Wayne Country Day 75, Oakwood 36

* GREENVILLE -- Wayne Country Day jumped out to a 30-point lead at halftime and cruised past Oakwood Academy on Tuesday night.

Tyson Pearson led the Chargers with 24 points. Josh Gregory added 21 points and Brandon McCarter tallied 11 points.

Wayne Country Day entertains Greenfield on Friday.

Southern Wayne 69, North Lenoir 58

* DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne rode the wave of an emotional senior night to an important victory on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference basketball scene on Tuesday night.

The Saints took down North Lenoir 69-58 and locked up at least a share of the regular-season conference championship.

Bernard Gross led the way for Southern Wayne with 16 points. Delfawn Worrells added nine points and Devondre Johnson chipped-in a career best eight points.

Southern Wayne (17-4 overall, 9-2 ECC) visits Charles B. Aycock on Thursday.

Faith Christian 55,

Cornerstone Christian 43

* FAYETTEVILLE -- Faith Christian played stellar defense throughout a 55-43 win over Cornerstone Christian on Tuesday night.

Aaron Hill led the Conquerors offense with 16 points. Silas Denlinger added 11 points.

Faith Christian begins postseason play Thursday night in Kinston.

Wrestling

Dixon 48, Rosewood 33

* BEAR CREEK -- Dixon triumphed in the first six individual contested matches and stunned defending eastern 1-A dual-team champion Rosewood, 48-33, at Chatham Central on Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs (21-6 overall) eliminated Central Academy in their next match and will face North Rowan for the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A east championship on Saturday.

Rosewood concluded the year 34-8 overall.

"We started at the worst possible weight class in the way we match up with Dixon," said Eagles head coach Bill Edmundson. "Their strength is in their upper weight classes and ours is in our lower weight classes. When we drew the starting weight at 135, I met with the team and explained to them Dixon may have a run to begin with, but not to lose focus or give up in their matches."

Dixon raced to a 48-3 lead and forfeited out the remaining five individual matches. Taylor McGill claimed the Eagles' lone individual contested match at 189. Teammates Angel Jaramillo, Chris Lane, Nick Quillen, Dallas Pope and Zach Behrend each drew a forfeit.

Rosewood will play host to the NCHSAA 1-A east individual regional tournament Feb. 18-19.

Girls' basketball

Triton 48, Eastern Wayne 28

* Eastern Wayne could not sustain its early momentum and Triton took advantage in a 48-28 victory in New Hope on Tuesday night.

The Warriors opened the game with a 10-8 lead after one quarter and only trailed by one point at halftime, but the Hawks interior size proved too much to handle in the second half.

Shequetta McKoy led the Hawks with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Brittany Scurlock paced the Eastern Wayne offense with nine points. Janielle Daniel and Chelsea Hill each added four points.

Eastern Wayne travels to North Lenoir on Thursday night.

Cape Fear 58, Wayne Christian 44

* FAYETTEVILLE -- Wayne Christian's season ended in disappointing fashion, with a loss to Cape Fear Christian in the opening round of the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament on Tuesday.

Brooke Barfield led the Eagles offense with a season- and career-high 25 points. Carly Hightower added six points and four rebounds.

Wayne Christian finished the year 5-15 overall.

Oakwood 65, Wayne Country Day 53

* GREENVILLE -- Wayne Country Day failed to slow down the Oakwood offense on Tuesday night in a 55-53 defeat.

Catherine Ford led the Chargers with 29 points. Mack Thompson added seven points in the loss.

Wayne Country Day plays host to Greenfield on Friday.

North Duplin 43, Rosewood 32

* CALYPSO -- North Duplin rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half and knocked off Rosewood 43-32 on Tuesday night.

Jessica Jones led the Rebels' offense with 20 points. Briana Oliver also reached double figures with 11 points.

Ellen Morgan paced the Rosewood attack with seven points. Logan Bill and Megann Tyndall each finished with five points.

Rosewood will travel to Goldsboro tonight. North Duplin will be the guest of Spring Creek on Friday night.

Ayden-Grifton 55, Princeton 46

* PRINCETON -- Princeton could not match the Ayden-Grifton offense in a 55-46 loss on Tuesday night.

Ashley Dillahunt led the Chargers with 20 points.

Savanna Massengill ignited the Dawgs' attack with 20 points and 19 rebounds. Megan Gerell added eight points in the loss.

Princeton (8-14 overall) visits archrival Rosewood on Friday night.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 44, Oakwood 40 -- Marlon Corley led the Chargers with 13 points. Dayton Meadows added nine points in the win.

Middle schools

* Girls' basketball: Wayne Christian 17, Cape Fear 15 -- Hunter Kaler paced the Eagles offense with six points. Emily Wells added four points.

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 50, Oakwood 38 -- Cory Carpenter led the Chargers with 16 points. Preston Edwards added 15 points.

* Boys' basketball: Community Christian 36, Wayne Christian 33 (OT) -- Seth Harrell led the Eagles' seventh-grade team with 17 points in their opening, Carolina Christian 1-A tournament contest. Wayne Christian concluded the year 5-9 overall.

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Christian 40, Christ Covenant 10 -- Victor Kokiko paced the Eagles' eighth-grade team with 11 points. Bryce Norman chipped in 10 for Wayne Christian, which improved to 8-7 overall this season.
