PIKEVILLE -- Senior forward Brandon Winford pumped in a game-high 16 points, and Charles B. Aycock turned back South Johnston 42-33 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Friday evening.

Winford grabbed five rebounds for the Golden Falcons, who rose to 4-14 overall and 3-6 against league opposition this season.

"It was a nice win," said Aycock head coach Steve Moats. "I thought our defense was really good. They've got some good 3-point shooters on their team. We were able to close out and not give them too many open looks.

"And's probably the best we've rebounded all year."

The Trojans toiled through a seven-minute scoring drought that included 13 consecutive missed shots after DJ Collins and Casey Turnage drained back-to-back 3-pointers to open the game.

South Johnston (4-16, 2-6) converted just four of 26 field goals in the opening half and the percentage dwindled after four missed shots to start the third quarter. Aycock led 29-12 by that point.

Collins (15 points) pumped in nine third-quarter points as the Trojans pulled to nine points twice in the period. The Golden Falcons answered each challenge and kept control with solid free throw shooting down the stretch.

Randall Fulghum and Cameron Rowe scored nine points apiece for Aycock, which recorded 30-plus rebounds for the game.
