WCDS varsities drop CPIC contests at nemesis Greenfield

WILSON -- Greenfield School took control of the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference varsity boys' basketball race with a 63-52 win at home against Wayne Country Day on Friday night.

The state-ranked Knights, playing in their alternate black uniforms, fell behind in the first quarter before rallying behind junior Sam Hughes, who had 12 of his team-high 20 points in the first two quarters.

"Wayne hit us right in the face early. We were down 10 in the first quarter," said Greenfield head coach Rob Salter. "They were putting on a clinic, but our guys took it and never put their head down. We battled back and had the lead at halftime."

Greenfield, No. 2 in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll, upped its record to 16-6, including 3-0 in CPIC games.

Freshman Jamie Johnson, getting the start in place of senior DeAndre Alston who was sick for much of the week, rained in 4 of 6 3-pointers for 12 points.

Junior Aaron Rountree had 19 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots for the Knights.

Josh Gregory's 25 points paced Wayne Country Day, now 2-1 in league action. Brandon McCarter and Hil Tanner scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Greenfield knocked two-time defending CPIC regular-season champion Wayne Country Day from the top perch, 47-44.

Catherine Ford led the Chargers with 27 points. Mack Thompson provided six points and Sarah Best had five.

Wayne Country Day (9-4 overall, 2-1 CPIC) visits Faith Christian-Rocky Mount on Monday.
