PRINCETON -- For the first time this season, someone other than Ben Jacobs led the Princeton in scoring.
The result was the same.
Wes Wood delivered 26 points as the unbeaten Bulldogs dusted Carolina 1-A Conference archrival Rosewood 78-48 on Monday night. The game was moved up one day from its original date due to potential inclement weather tonight.
"I was really pleased how the guys came out tonight and took it upon themselves to put the game away in the second half," said Princeton head coach Jeff Davis. "I thought we got out-played a little bit in the second quarter and Rosewood was able to cut into the lead. But the third quarter was much better."
Princeton opened the game on a 12-2 run before a Rosewood timeout gave head coach Daniel Mitchell time to settle down his squad. The Eagles responded with a 6-0 run of their own and stuck within eight points the entire second quarter.
A buzzer-beater from Jykhia Applewhite to end the second quarter cut the Dawgs' advantage to six points at 33-27.
"We were locked in on defense in the second quarter, and that allowed us to get some steals and create some offense," said Mitchell. "In the third quarter, all of that kind of went away and we started giving up easy buckets." Led by six consecutive points from Jacobs, the Dawgs opened the second half on a 10-0 run and put the game away. A 3-pointer from Wood and a layup by C.J. Jeffreys pushed the Dawgs' lead to 20 and sealed the contest.
"I challenged my guys at halftime that I didn't want Rosewood to get to 50 points," said Davis. "Rosewood has a good team and they have some guys that can really shoot it, but I was not happy with our defensive effort in the first half."
Antonio Henriques paced the Eagles (9-5 overall, 1-4 CC) with 19 points. Jyonte Raynor added nine points and five rebounds.
Jacobs recorded a double-double with 24 points and 17 rebounds for the Dawgs (17-0, 4-0). Jeffreys and Justin Foy each finished with 12 points in the win.
Princeton entertains Spring Creek on Friday, while Rosewood travels to Ayden-Grifton.
