Goldsboro High School head basketball coach Patrick Reynell wanted to start a holiday tournament that would feature the best basketball that Wayne County had to offer.
Mother Nature had other ideas.
The Cougar Classic, which was originally scheduled for Monday and Tuesday was pushed back a day by snow and then ultimately cancelled due to slick conditions on Tuesday night that would have created unsafe late-night travel conditions for the teams attending.
"This is disappointing for everyone because we were looking forward to restarting an annual Holiday tournament here in Wayne County similar to what neighboring counties do," Reynell said. "Unfortunately, with the icy conditions still around the gymnasium and the low temperatures anticipated for tonight, it would not have been the safest conditions."
All is not lost for local basketball fans however, as Eastern Wayne will still visit Goldsboro tonight for a normal slate of games. The varsity girls will play at 6 p.m. and the varsity boys will play at 7:30 p.m. On Thursday, Southern Wayne will come to Norvell T. Lee Gymnasium and play the same schedule.
"Thankfully Eastern Wayne and Southern Wayne have been gracious enough to still agree and visit Goldsboro for a slate of non-conference games," Reynell said. "Hopefully next year Mother Nature is more cooperative and we can restart a basketball tournament here in Wayne County."
