Wachovia Conference Cup

Rosewood leads Carolina 1-A

CHAPEL HILL -- Rosewood defended its regular-season volleyball championship, finished second in men's soccer and grabbed the overall lead in the Carolina 1-A Conference Wachovia Conference Cup after the fall sports campaign.

The Eagles collected 18.5 points, with Ayden-Grifton a close second at 17.

Spring Creek, which won its third straight men's soccer championship, is third at 12.5. Princeton (12), North Duplin (11.5) and Goldsboro (10.5) round out the six-team league.

Second-year members South Johnston and Triton are the leaders on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference scene. South holds a 35.5-34 edge over Triton, with Charles B. Aycock third at 31.5 points.

The Golden Falcons finished second in women's tennis and men's soccer.

Eastern Wayne is fourth at 31 points, followed by Southern Wayne (19), Cleveland (17) and North Lenoir (15).

The Wachovia Conference Cup is awarded to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each individual athletic conference. In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference.

Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.

Wrestling

Dawgs turn back Cougars

PRINCETON -- Princeton triumphed in seven of nine contested individual bouts in a 36-30, non-conference triumph over Goldsboro on the wrestling mat.

Alan Fader (125 pounds), Dillon Pace (130), Patrick Norris (152), Julian Gomez (160), Cody Pope (189), Jacob Yelverton (215) and heavyweight James Hawley each picked up a win. Hawley recorded the night's fastest victory, a 24-second fall over the Cougars' Elijah Slater.

Pace, Norris, Pope and Yelverton each pinned their respective opponent.

Kyle Gurley (119) and Kevin Taylor (135) each logged a pin for the Cougars, who are back on the mat after a 15-year absence. Augustus Altman, Shaquan Oliver and Darrell Smithers each drew a forfeit for Goldsboro.

The teams double-forfeited at 103 and 145 pounds.

Princeton (1-6 overall) travels to Rosewood on Dec. 29 for a tri-meet that includes Ayden-Grifton. Goldsboro (0-5) plays host to perennial powerhouse Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday. Match time is 7 p.m. at Wayne Academy.

Warriors pin Trojans

FOUR OAKS -- Eastern Wayne opened its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference campaign with a 45-34 triumph over South Johnston.

The Warriors (4-3 overall, 1-0 ECC) triumphed in just three of eight contested matches. The short-handed Trojans (1-7, 0-1) surrendered five forfeits.

Heavyweight Blake Terrell and 152-pounder Quadrick Williams each recorded a pin for Eastern Wayne. James Barrett earned a 7-2 decision over South's Austin Abney at 215 pounds.

Brice Heller, Warren Kirkwood, Tyshawn Koonce, Nolan Kirkwood and Austin Helm each drew a forfeit. Helm and Nolan Kirkwood each have 12 individual victories this season.

Eastern Wayne plays host to a five-team dual today. Matches in the round-robin event begin at 3 p.m.

Boys' basketball

Lejeune 74, North Duplin 59

JACKSONVILLE -- North Duplin played without leading scorer Breyon Johnson, who was out with an injury, and fell at Lejeune 74-59 on Wednesday night.

James Kornegay paced the Rebels' offense with 17 points. Devin Oliver added 16 points and Konner Brock added nine points in the defeat.

North Duplin (2-3 overall) travels to James Kenan on Monday night.

Girls' basketball

Lejeune 42, North Duplin 26

JACKSONVILLE -- North Duplin could not overcome a hot start by Lejeune on Wednesday night and fell to the Devilpups, 42-26.

Angelica Favela led the Rebels with 12 points. Jessica Jones added eight points in the defeat.

North Duplin (0-5 overall) visits James Kenan on Monday.

Eastern Wayne 71, Spring Creek 26

Eastern Wayne opened the game with a scoring frenzy and never looked back in a 71-26, non-conference win over county rival Spring Creek on Wednesday night.

Carly Givens led the Warriors with 16 points and seven steals. Sedonia Scott added 14 points.

Eastern Wayne (2-7 overall) entertains Wilson Hunt tonight.
