MOUNT OLIVE - Mount Olive led by as many as eight points in the first half, but Lincoln Memorial broke away from a halftime tie for a 73-54 victory over the Trojans in non-conference women's basketball Saturday at Kornegay Arena. Andrea Jones, who missed the Trojans' last two games with an injury, scored a team-high 16 points.
Lincoln Memorial's Dayshalee Salaman led all players with 27 points, including a buzzer-beater from beyond half-court to end the first half.
Laporsha Davis had assists on three straight baskets during a 10-0 run as Mount Olive (2-2) built an eight-point lead midway through the first half. Jones scored six consecutive points and Brittany Miller's jumper gave the Trojans an 18-10 lead with 9:19 remaining before halftime.
After Lincoln Memorial (3-1) cut the margin in half, Shequanta McGee's three-pointer with 8:08 left extended the Trojans' lead to 21-14. The lead was still seven when Lincoln Memorial put together an 8-0 run of its own. Melanie Hemphill hit a pair of layups and Patrice Talley's free throw with 4:49 remaining put the Railsplitters back on top 24-23.
The lead changed hands five times over the next four minutes before Davis' layup gave Mount Olive a three-point lead. But Salaman banked her three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game 31-31 at the break.
Jasmine Whitby hit a three-pointer for Mount Olive early in the second half and the game remained tied 38-38 with 17:29 remaining. But Talley's basket put Lincoln Memorial back on top and Salaman followed with back-to-back three-pointers as the Railsplitters took the lead for good. Whitby's layup with 12:31 left to play pulled the Trojans within five, but Lincoln Memorial built the lead to 10 with just under 10 minutes left and the margin stayed in double figures the remainder of the game.
Whitby finished with 13 points for Mount Olive, while Davis dished out a game-high six assists. Miller led the Trojans on the boards with nine rebounds.
Salaman, who scored 21 of her points in the second half, was 8-for-10 from the field for Lincoln Memorial, including 5-of-6 from three-point range. Talley recorded a double-double for the Railsplitters with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Hemphill narrowly missed her own double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Mount Olive resumes Conference Carolinas play Tuesday as the Trojans head to Wilson, N.C., to take on Barton. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
