WILSON -- Another Barton-Mount Olive men's basketball classic was staged in the "Dog House" in front of some 1,500 fans on Tuesday night, and the visiting Trojans emerged with a hard-fought 71-66 Conference Carolinas victory.

Mount Olive had a 62-55 lead with 2:47 to play, but Barton went on an 11-4 run to make it 66-66 with 16 seconds left. An erroneous foul two seconds later put the Trojans on the line, and Brandon Allen drilled both foul shots for a 68-66 MOC lead.

An errant pass with eight ticks left gave the ball back to the Trojans, who got two free throws from Derek Staton and Mahamed Ibrahim in waning seconds to secure the win.

Mount Olive, which was opening league play, remained unbeaten at 4-0. Barton slipped to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in conference action. The Trojans entertain Limestone at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The lead changed hands 13 times and was tied nine times, including 27-27 at intermission.

Staton paced all scorers with 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting. He was 3-of-5 from 3-point range and teammate Ewon Wright knocked down 4-of-6 from long range en route to 14 points. Allen registered a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds and Dory Hines snared 10 rebounds and dished off eight assists and had four steals.

Junior guard Jaren Haley powered the Barton attack with 17 points on 5-of-8 3-point shooting. He also had four assists and three steals. Senior forward L.J. Dunn, who tallied eight of Barton's final 11 points, drained 13 points and pulled 11 boards. Sophomore guard Jarrett Jernigan scored 11.

Women's game

Sophomore center Janae Jackson (Fort Belvoir, VA) recorded a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds Tuesday night to help host Barton College beat rival Mount Olive 81-72 in a Conference Carolinas women's basketball clash.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the league while Mount Olive left at 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Trojans play host to Limestone at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Kornegay Arena.

Barton again featured a balanced attack, with four players scoring in double figures. Shawnta Shelton went 5-of-7 from 3-point land and scored a team-high 19 points, Jolanda Mitchell tallied 12 points and Janetta Robinson added 10. Conference Player of the Week Jamila Johnson struggled with her shot (1-of-9) but finished with a career-high nine assists.

Andrea Jones canned a game-high 24 for the Trojans on 10-of-16 shooting; Jasmine Whitby notched a double-double with 20 points, 13 boards; and Shequanta McGee scored 10.

A 14-6 run punctuated by a Shelton bomb from the baseline put the Lady Bulldogs up 67-62 with 11:12 remaining. Mitchell provided some big buckets as Barton pulled away to the victory.
