NASHVILLE -- Tara Simmons found the layout at Birchwood Country Club to her liking and fired an 18-hole round of 76 to claim medalist honors at the N.C. High School Athletic Association Classes 1-A/2-A/3-A East Regional girls' golf tournament on Monday.
Simmons began her day with a double bogey, but quickly turned her afternoon around with a pair of birdies.
"Tara looks like she is on a mission right now," said C.B. Aycock head coach Roger Rhodes said. "She doesn't try to trick anybody, she just hits the ball straight and she finishes well."
Jesse Stewart carded a 111 for the Golden Falcons. Teammates Jordyn Howell (117) and Madison Aycock (127) rounded out the C.B. Aycock team total of 304.
Topsail won the team title.
Simmons advances to the two-day, 36-hole state tournament, which will be contested at Longleaf Golf Club in Pinehurst on Nov. 1-2. The talented sophomore finished fourth in the individual standings in the 2009 state championship.
