Wayne Christian soccer falls

DAVIDSON -- Davidson Day School collected the game-winning goal in the final three minutes of regulation, and turned back Wayne Christian 3-2 in their opening-round, N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A boys' soccer playoff game Saturday.

Greg Alexander scored twice for the ninth-seeded Eagles and earned a spot on the 2010 NCISAA All-State Class 1-A team along with teammate Jordan Crouthamel. Alexander, who punched in a team-best 22 goals this season, received all-state recognition for the third consecutive season.

Crouthamel assisted on Alexander's second goal against Davidson.

"It was a pretty even game and played fairly well," said fifth-year Eagles' head coach Daryl Anderson. "It was a good game and a good team to play, a team I'd like to play again. It just wasn't meant for us to win, I guess."

The loss marked the final game for Alexander and five fellow seniors -- Crouthamel, goalie Chase King, Anthony Mulligan, Tyler Mooring and Noah Kearney. Alexander, Crouthamel, King and Alexander are four-year players who finished with a combined 54-26-2 record.

Mooring and Kearney played varsity their junior and senior seasons.

"They were upset," said Anderson of his seniors. "They left it all on the field, played as hard as they could. I'm really going to miss all of them. They've done a great job for us, and it's going to be really hard to replace Greg and Chase."

Alexander was also named the CCC co-player-of-the-year.

Wayne Christian is expected to welcome nine freshmen to its program in 2011.

"We might not be as strong next year, but the next year, we'll be tough," said Anderson. "I'm still excited."

The Eagles concluded the year 13-8-0 overall.
