Every script has a protagonist and an antagonist.

Carolina 1-A Conference opponents Goldsboro and Rosewood filled those roles on Friday night at Cougar Stadium.

And Andre Montgomery ended up stealing the show. The talented Goldsboro running back racked up a season-high 282 yards on 16 carries and scored five touchdowns as the Cougars prevailed 41-7 before a homecoming crowd.

"I have to give a lot of the credit to my offensive line," Montgomery said after the game. "Those guys did an excellent job of creating space and all I had to do was hit the hole hard."

Montgomery opened the scoring with a 32-yard scamper in the first quarter.

Rosewood marched the ball methodically down field and answered on the opening play of the second quarter when Logan Waters broke through on a two-yard run. On the Cougars' next two possessions, Montgomery toted the ball for a pair of scoring runs from 67 and 45 yards, respectively.

"I wanted our backs to have a big night because it was their last homecoming," said Goldsboro head coach Eric Reid. "Andre made the most of his opportunities and that is a product of his hard work over his career here."

The Eagles had a chance to get back in the ballgame before halftime as they drove the ball to edge of the Cougars' red zone. On third down, quarterback Taylor McGill's pass attempt was batted up in the air at the line of scrimmage and intercepted by Karim Floyd.

Floyd took the pick 80 yards for another Cougar touchdown and made the score 28-7 at the half.

"That was a big play because we had been able to move the ball on offense throughout the first half," said Rosewood head coach Robert Britt. "If we get a score there who knows what might happen, but Goldsboro made a play to their credit."

Montgomery broke touchdown runs of 51 and 40 yards in the second half to cap the scoring.

Freddie Jones added 60 yards on the ground to complement Montgomery's big night. Corteiz Sprangle finished with 27 yards passing on one completion.

Waters led the Rosewood attack with 135 yards on 28 carries. McGill completed two passes, both to Cody Harris, for 19 yards.

"We still have a lot of things to work on," said Reid. "Coach Britt and his guys came in and we knew that we could not underestimate them. We gave the kind of effort we need to give every week going forward."

Goldsboro (5-3 overall, 2-0 CC) travels to Princeton on Friday, while Rosewood (2-6, 0-2) is the homecoming guest of county rival Spring Creek.
