PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock needed some time to settle down.

Eventually the excitement of senior night wore off and the Golden Falcons got back to business.

The result was a 25-20, 25-16, 25-16 victory over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Southern Wayne in the regular-season finale for both teams Thursday evening.

"I think the adrenaline was flowing and we got a little ahead of ourselves early," said C.B. Aycock head coach Davis Harris. "We had some people playing out of position and it threw us off just a little bit."

Southern Wayne jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first set behind two kills by Taylor Hood and a pair of blocks by Madison Davis. The Golden Falcons got the momentum and the lead back behind the strong serve of Connor Davis, who reeled off eight consecutive points including three aces.

Southern Wayne battled back to tie the set at 20-20, but failed to get the critical points it needed to win. Madison Mercer delivered back-to-back kills and pushed the Golden Falcons to the victory.

"We have our moments, but we can't quite seem to put it all together," said Saints head coach Eric Durol. "It just seemed like we lacked energy even when we were playing well."

The Saints opened an early lead in the second set but watched as a familiar story unfolded.

With the set tied at 12-12, Connor Davis ripped a pair of kills and pushed the Golden Falcons ahead for good.

C.B. Aycock dominated the third set. Davis finished with nine kills and four aces. Mercer added nine kills and four blocks. Rachel Jordan tallied 21 assists.

Courtney Holland led the Saints with four kills and six blocks.

Both teams return to action Monday in the ECC tournament. C.B. Aycock (9-8 overall, 6-6 ECC) will play host to Cleveland High School. Southern Wayne (3-14, 0-12) travels to South Johnston.
