Time to get muddy.

Their earlier meeting postponed due to Hurricane Earl, fellow 1-A football programs Goldsboro and East Carteret -- as of press time -- are expected to conclude their respective non-conference seasons tonight at Cougar Stadium.

Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

In other games, Greene Central continues its long-running series against Eastern Plains 2-A foe North Pitt, while James Kenan and Pender battle in a critical Tri-County 1-A contest.

Goldsboro (2-3 overall) suffered a 10-point, non-conference loss to county rival Southern Wayne just seven days ago. The Cougars were held to season lows in rushing yards (8) and total yards of offense (70).

Prior to having its modest two-game win streak snapped, Goldsboro had scored 83 points combined against Charles B. Aycock and Washington.

"Southern Wayne wanted it more," said fourth-year Cougars head coach Eric Reid after the game last week. "My hat's off to them. Until we realize that we have to come and play four quarters, and take our opponents seriously, we're going to have a lot of nights like this."

The Mariners dropped to 0-5 after a 23-point loss to Rosewood last week.

Greene Central (2-4) meets North Pitt (4-2) for the 40th time in their rivalry, which started in 1978. The Rams lead the all-time series 27-12, including a one-point victory last season in Snow Hill.

The Panthers will look to snap a two-game skid.

James Kenan (2-2) travels down Interstate 40 to Burgaw in search of its first conference win of the season. The Tigers have endured back-to-back losses to perennial 2-A power East Duplin and league foe Union.

Pender is 4-0 and ranked No. 2 statewide in the latest Associated Press prep poll. Josh Johnson leads the Patriots' ground attack with 163.8 yards an outing.
