Area swimmer, Prince passes away

Goldsboro native and N.C. Sports Hall of Fame member Elizabeth Prince Nufer Dixon passed away on Thursday in Wake County.

As a young girl Prince started swimming at the Goldsboro community pool and became a staple at swim meets across the state. During her teen years, Dixon was recognized as one of the top swimmers in the region and held multiple AAU swimming records.

Her career culminated with an AAU World record swimat Bowman Gray Pool in Chapel Hill. Prince was inducted into the Goldsboro High School athletics hall of fame and the N.C. Sports hall of fame. She was recognized by Sports Illustrated as the "Best Woman" among the 50 greatest sports figures in state history.

Prince spent her later years teaching children how to swim. She also enjoyed tennis and golf.

A celebration of Prince's life is being held on Tuesday at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Raleigh.
