DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne jumped out to an early lead in the opening set of its volleyball match against county and Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference volleyball rival Charles B. Aycock.

The Saints could not preserve the early good fortune and eventually fell 25-13, 25-18, 25-8 at the hands of the Golden Falcons on Tuesday night.

After the Saints built a quick 3-1 lead in the opening set, Connor Davis took over at the service line and led the Golden Falcons back into the lead. Davis stroked five consecutive aces and six total points before a kill by Southern Wayne standout Courtney Holland ended the rally.

"When we serve the ball like that we are really tough to beat," said C.B. Aycock head coach Davis Harris. "Our serves set up our offense and tonight we were able to get some good attacks going at the net because we put the ball in good spots."

The visitors lacked their usual vigor in the second set, but Davis and Madison Mercer began to assert themselves at the net and kept their team in the set early. Mercer delivered back-to-back kills that pushed the Golden Falcons out to an 8-7 advantage. Davis tallied a pair of kills that moved the visitors ahead 17-16, a lead that they would never relinquish.

C.B. Aycock dominated the third set as Southern Wayne head coach Eric Durol found some playing time for his less-experienced team members. Four aces by Rachel Jordan helped put the Golden falcons in front 8-0 and eventually cruise to the finish.

Mercer Led the victors with six kills and one block. Davis finished with eight aces. Bailee Hughes added four kills in the win.

C.B. Aycock (6-4 overall, 3-2 ECC) will host defending Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season and tournament champion Triton on Thursday.

Holland paced the Saints with four kills and two blocks. Taylor Hood added three kills and two aces.

Southern Wayne (2-8 overall, 0-5 ECC) travels to Kinston today.
