CB Aycock rallies past Eastern Wayne soccer

There is not a statistic for momentum.

But good teams definitely know when they have it.

Charles B. Aycock stole the momentum from Eastern Wayne early in the second half on Monday evening and walked off with a 4-2 decision on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference boys' soccer scene.

"I thought Eastern Wayne played pretty well both halves," said Golden Falcons head coach Kevin Adkins. "My guys started out poorly, but they got it together in the second half."

Eastern Wayne jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the opening 40 minutes when Kyle Sasser buried a perfect shot off a cross by Ryan Allison.

The teams played back-and-forth until the intermission and into the second half as the Golden Falcons did all they could to control the possession and set up opportunities.

In the 53rd minute, the Golden Falcons evened the score when Jacob Palma headed a ball into the net off a corner kick by Michael Fearney. Five minutes later, the visitors grabbed the lead when Travis Musselman collected a throw-in from Chase Thompson and hammered a shot past the Warriors' keeper.

"We did not defend set plays well enough tonight," said Eastern Wayne head coach Jorg Wagner. "We were slow to react and slow to make adjustments on the ball."

With his team trailing 2-1 with 20 minutes to play in the game, Sasser delivered a highlight-reel goal off a free kick from 20 yards out. Sasser fired a bending shot with right-to-left hook just under the crossbar and over the outstretched hands of C.B. Aycock keeper Brandon Davis.

The scoring play was so perfectly placed that it prompted a high-five between the opposing coaches at midfield.

"That goal was absolutely sick," said Davis after the game. "There was no other place to put it, and he hit it exactly where it had to be."

Davis got a measure of revenge in the 76th minute.

After a handball gave the Golden Falcons a free kick from 47 yards out, Davis came to midfield and took the kick. His lofted a pass into the 18-yard box which bounced over the head of the Warriors' keeper and into the net for the go-ahead goal.

"I have never done anything like that," Davis said. "I just wanted to put it in the box and give somebody a chance for a shot."

Kyle Powell added the Golden Falcons, final goal in the 79th minute on an assist by Palma.

C.B. Aycock (9-2-1 overall, 4-0-1 ECC) will have a week off before taking on Southern Wayne on Sept. 27. Eastern Wayne (2-5-0, 2-2-0) visits Triton on Wednesday.
