ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Chelsea Long ran the fourth-fastest time in Mount Olive College in school history and finished in the top four overall with teammate Courtney Siefert during the Winthrop University Invitational on Saturday.

The Trojans claimed first place in the "Garnet Division," which consisted of non-division schools including three Conference Carolinas rivals. MOC compiled 53 points, eight points less than division runner-up Spartanburg (S.C.) Methodist.

Long, who hails from Oregon, covered the 5K course in 19 minutes, 39.22 seconds. It was the first sub-20 minute time recorded by a Trojan female in seven years. Siefert, a freshman, crossed the line in 20:10.27.

Chelyn McCain (13th), Amber Thomspon (18th) and Christina Jordan (21st) contributed to the team score. North Duplin alum Rocio Alvarado ended up 29th with a personal-best time.

Hoffman breaks mark

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Paul Hoffman shattered a nine-year-old school recorded and claimed fourth place overall during the Winthrop University Invitational cross country meet on Saturday.

Hoffman covered the 8K course in 26:17.05, which broke the previous program mark of 26:24 set by Josh Quinn during the 2001 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference championship meet.

Kerry Maloney took sixth with a personal-best time of 26:33.79.

Overall, six MOC runners logged top-14 times. Kevin Ryan ended up eighth, followed by Dalton Souza (10th), Ronnie Sturgill (13th) and Chris Menjares (14th).

Mars Hill edged the Trojans 33-41 for the team title.

MOC spikers triumph

MOUNT OLIVE -- Freshman Lauren Lee pounded out a match-high 14 kills and collected five blocks as Mount Olive College eased past Converse (S.C.) College 25-23, 25-17, 22-25, 25-14 on the Conference Carolinas women's volleyball scene Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans (3-8 overall, 1-2 CC) snapped a four-game skid, including back-to-back defeats in league play.

Erika Conner provided a double-double, 11 kills and 12 digs. Six-foot-4 middle blocker Carly White contributed 14 kills and five blocks. Feliz Ramirez served a match-high seven aces and recorded 11 digs.

Kailey Preece supplied 43 assists.

The Trojans travel to in-state rival Pfeiffer on Wednesday before returning home for a Saturday afternoon match against league foe Erskine (S.C.) College.

Tough loss for MOC

BANNER ELK -- Lees-McRae notched the game-winning goal with 39 seconds left in the second overtime, and knocked off Mount Olive College, 3-2, in Conference Carolinas men's soccer action Saturday evening.

Matt Cargile scored goals for the Trojans in the 23rd and 51st minutes.

The Bobcats, the 2009 NCAA Division II runners-up, improved to 4-2-0 overall and 3-0-0 in league play this season.

Mount Olive (1-4-1, 0-2-0) entertains Francis Marion (S.C.) University on Wednesday. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Amon Field.

Trojans fall on road

BANNER ELK -- Lees-McRae converted the game-winning penalty kick in the final five-plus minutes of regulation, and turned back Conference Carolinas women's soccer rival Mount Olive, 2-1, on Saturday evening.

Sarah Porter collected the Trojans' lone goal.

MOC keeper Lyndsey McIntyre recorded 11 saves.

The Trojans (3-3-1 overall, 1-1 CC) entertain in-state foe Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at Amon Field.
